Iowa State this year and @niu, and to a lesser degree @creighton during mp's first year wear huge wins. I'd throw New Mexico in as well, they went to the tournament (or melted down Alford style late in the season and went to the NIT) IIRC the year Drake beat them in Mexico. However this win is easily tier 1 also, just not quite at the level of the other games I mentioned, IMO.

Keep in mind what I said - the most significant. Those games were meaningless (ISU this year wasn't, but its non-conference) because we really weren't in a position to do anything. Also, I don't remember those previous wins making sportscenter and leading to POW for a Drake player. I'm going to have to disagree with you that those wins were more significant that WSU. I just don't see how this isn't the most significant win.

DUL, pretty major rough crowd on what seems like an obvious point. I agree that the WSU win is the most significant IF we don't have any BU/BU style losses to derail it. If the Containment Center remains intact and DU finishes the Valley with a 5-2 record, resulting in a NIT berth, the WSU win will be monumental.

I've been looking for you, but have had a hard time finding it. Sportscenter is treated like a local newscast, and nobody archives it. The only things I can find are major clips, and they cut out the Drake bit between the games.

Simply put a lot of basketball left to play. Team is getting better and maturing on the court. Still have work to do i.e. K. Woods needs to catch the little dish passes from teamates. He missed 3 in the last game. Others still missed the help side defense. But overall much better basketball is being played and there is room for guarded optimism for the rest of this season and look out for the future.

What dance? Sadie Hawkins? Look, I watched the game Saturday and the fellas played great. They never gave up. Nor did they ever give up against CU. Drake has a chance to finish the conference in a place they haven't had in awhile but I am not putting the cart ahead of the horse. As they told me during rehab, I'll take it one day at a time.

Darth, I am probably the most negative guy on here (besides Drakey!) and yes, I was the guy who said Simons can play in the NBA! You are right on all counts. We are right on the edge and the whole thing could come crashing down. I still believe P lost us the Creighton w/his silly decision to switch every ball screen and let McDermott have his way w/us. In the past after a 2 game losing streak w/the hottest team in the conference coming to town, undefeated on the road, we probably would have lost by 10-15 pts, and maybe we would have gone on a 5 game losing streak. Dogs are playing extremely hard, and also w/a lot of confidence. We now have the 3rd scorer in Alexander, and Simons has become so much more than a 100% spot up shooter. We all know what Rice can do. Look, we all want the Dogs to recapture the magic of Keno's year. That probably won't happen again. However, after the last 3 miserable years under P, it does look like the light is coming on. The Dogs have 7 more conference games to prove themselves along w/P.

Excellent post, USMC. The koolaid is totally out of control right now and it seems like GG took a swig of it. Would anyone be this way if WSU had simply hit the free throw(s) with 10seconds left? I'm not a psych major but this group seems borderline manic-depressive. DT needs to start distributing the meds post-haste. We've got threads about future NBA players, 50+ messages about a bracketbuster game that's 3 weeks from being played, talk of going 7-1 down the stretch, and banter on NIT (or even NCAA?!) when D is 6-5 in conference. They are 2 games from 7th place folks. This team the past few years has been remarkably poor the second time thru the MVC. They're already 0-2 in "rematch" games (C, UNI). They were losing to B in the 2nd half...at home. It took OT to beat a team tied for 8th. There are certainly signs of improvement (winning on road, strong asst coaches, a shorter rotation, rebounding). But the general vibe I'm getting from this group is they would bite at the next hook they see. Look, I want to believe too, but for now, I'm staying down here. If they get to 11 wins in conference, it's possible I will put up the "for sale" sign for my prime real estate.

If the only reason people are getting excited is because of wins and losses, I completely agree with everything you said. My ascent from the abyss, while timed with the win over SIU, has to do with what I'm seeing on the floor (or not seeing) not the final score.

This year is different. It is easy to see if you just compare it to 2008-09. Imagine JP and Craig S. battling it out at the 1 like Karl M and Kurt A. Imagine Adam T running around like a headless chicken ala Ben S. Imagine JY being treated like a star ala RR. Imagine Heemskerk and Alex Jones (I mean White) alternating at the 5. And then add what this team does not have -- Bucky. If that team had been coached like this team then that year would have ended much better than it did. I understand P's past. But I think you are comparing apples to oranges (or maybe red delicious to granny smith's).

Awesome game dogs! I was at a show in Vegas during the game so I missed it. I was going to bet WSU to win. Payout was something like bet 11 to win 13. So I bet on the Dogs plus the 9.5 points. I guess I should have had more confidence in them and bet them straight up to win. Would have been a large payout.

Best game I've been to sice the Creighton game in '04, and maybe even better than that. There were several fun games in '08, but I don't think any of them stacked up to what we saw on Saturday.

After the game, some friends and I went to Jethro's. I ended up talking to the official timekeeper for the game for about an hour or so. That was interesting. Then as we were leaving, I noticed Rayvonte Rice and his family and friends were there too. That was pretty cool because we were watching Sports Center and he was seeing himself there, which may have been his first time on SC.

Good stuff. Keep it up, Drake.

Woods and Clark had a combined defensive game of the year by limiting Stutz.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Stutz scored 27 points; he averages about 13 points per game. LOL, I guess they limited him to double his average.

I just watched the game again on ESPN3 (archived). It was much more enjoyable to watch the game again knowing what that the outcome would be a happy ending. Anyway, I note that Rayvonte Rice had a poor shooting percentage night because he was generally attempting to take the ball inside against Stutz (7 footer). Rayvonte Rice refused to back down to the 7 footer, but, given his shooting percentage, maybe he should have. Woods and Clark had a combined defensive game of the year by limiting Stutz. Jeffers had the break-out game of the year. Keep it up.

The best move Phleps made came in the middle of the third overtime. Alexander was tired, yet still solid on offense. He pulled him for Karl and his fresh legs for defense. Phelps is also using his timeouts at the right time. I think he knows the game, now he knows his players and the players know him. Seriously, he started with a bunch of breast feeders. These guys are no longer crawling, but beginning to run and explore faster and with no hesitation. Boy, I hope none of them hits their head on the corner table.

That is the best the Dogs have looked under Phelps. Simons was amazing. Alexander was the difference maker. There were still a lot of stagnant offensive possessions, but the defense, particularly in the overtimes was way better than we have seen before this year.

Too bad we lost at home to a mediocre UNI team. We'd be a solid third place.

Over on Shockernet, some of their fans are furious with the refs. I thought the refs did okay (and were surprisingly competent for a Saturday night MVC crew). WSU fans are really mad about a no-call on a Rice charge. Anybody remember that play? Because I don't.

Yeah, it was toward the end of the second OT.....Rice drove into traffic, knocked over two guys, fumbled the ball, then dished to Alexander for a 3.

That play is at about 2:37 of the ESPN3 replay. Rice made contact with two defenders, and only one fell down on contact. The guy who fell down was moving horizontally at the time of contact and hadn't established position, and the other guy didn't fall until well after contact when he tripped going for the loose ball. Looked like a good no-call to me.

I remember bad calls on us and bad calls on them. The refs were very out of the way last night. When we had bad calls I couldn't bring myself to be too angry because it was going both ways. They were definitely not what decided the game.

Attendance was about 5k btw. It should be more, but for what we average, it was a good turnout.

Big thing is that the students are super hyped about what just happened, word is going to spread. Combined with the advertisement blitz by the SAA, we should see a good turnout for MSU next Saturday.

Yes that will come, let's not forget, he's still a freshman. We've seen as in Ind St game when he scored 22, he has the potential. As he learns his role better and learns "the angles" as Adam Emmaneker frequently talks about, his driving, penetrating, dishing and scoring will all improve. He has the skills, he just needs a little more experience.

I'm not sure that Phelps is becoming more sure of himself. He has all of his assistants standing up behind him. So who is really coaching the team? I don't think that all five coaches need to be standing and jumping around on the sidlines. It was embarrassing last night the way the assistants were jumping around.SIT DOWN. I understand it is a big game, but act like you have been there before. I have yet to see another staff in the Valley where all the assistants stand up and coach. Nice Win and great for the team and the players....they played HARD.
