Gordon, Not to be a contrarian and I respect Phelps but I do wish Keno was still here. To compare Providence to Drake is comparing apples and oranges. Providence basketball has a pretty deep dysfunctional culture that Keno is trying to change. We all know culture change is the hardest. Case in point, Tim Welsh, the former coach who Keno replaced, was arrested recently while passed out drunk at a green traffic light. Tim Welsh set the tone for 10 years while he was there. Greedy Peterson was not Keno's recruit. Keno, Chris and Rodell are good recruiters who brought in very fine student athletes while at Drake and I think they will do the same in the Big East. I wish them all the luck and success in the world. Go Bulldogs! Go Friars!

Im wondering why Keno didn't take SJ and some of his other studs with him?

Perhaps Keno should have jumped at the opportunity to coach at Iowa this fall. Although many Iowa fans that I know really didn't want him because they were concerned about his recruiting abilities.

Thanks for the link DUB, and for all of you who are yearning for the good old days of the 07-08 season, I think this is the most important part of the article:

"Lacy and Still, both freshmen, were part of coach Keno Davis' first recruiting class at Providence. Neither player made much of an impact on the court this season. Lacy averaged 1.9 points and played in 22 games, while Still averaged 1.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in 25 games.

Davis had already announced Lacy's plans to transfer to another college next year, but it is unclear how this incident will affect Still's tenure with the basketball program. Still was seen as a big man with potential to help the team after a few more years of seasoning."

I'll take Coach P's recruiting classes and the players who can help right away -- even in back up roles -- instead of the "potential" to help after a few years of "seasoning."

In saying that, if Drake would have offered him a contract extension for multiple years - $750,000 per year - at mid-season , I think he would have accepted and we would not be having this conversation right now.

The quoted information is somewhat out of context, but I don't think I changed the intended points of the OP. If I did, I apologize.

Anyway:
If the school came up with $250,000 which probably is a stretch, and if $750,000 would have kept him as has been suggested;
That means those boosters would need to come up with a half million every year.
There's no doubt that Drake has some successful people with deep pockets involved with the school, but would they be expected to buy in to that kind of an arrangement?

From what I heard it had more to do with Drake not letting her, and less to do with what she actually wanted to do. There is a reason Drake has the lowest paid coaches in the Valley in every sport.

I am curious though how much revenue has dropped since the 07-08 season and maybe throwing Keno a bone would have been cheaper in the long run?

If I had to guess how much lost revenue, over the long run - a lot!

dudistance, I also heard that the boosters were trying to work with Keno after Sandy basically wouldn't give him the time of day. I don't think he was asking for the moon. The guy had a successful program here. He and his wife were surrounded by family and they just had their first baby. I don't think he really wanted to leave. The Big East opportunity was exciting but it wouldn't have taken all that much to keep him here. That being said, I've always wished Mark Phelps all the success in the world. I just don't think assumptions that our teams would be better had Keno stuck around are fair to Phelps or the Drake fans.Personally, I want to forget about Keno.

I agree with another poster that last year's team could have posted 20 wins had MP2 not
coached at all. MP2 has made certain that the mystique of Keno Davis will live forever. In order to change that, he must demonstrate that he is capable and worthy of any praise. I thought it a strange coincidence that Keno's video clip to the seniors (09-10) had technical difficulty and never appeared.

I agree no one knows for sure. I think it would have been a strong possibility. We had 17 wins with a coaching change. If we would have maintained the same coaching staff and philosophy, I think there would have been a good chance we would have picked up at least three more. Usually you have a few loss that should have been wins when a coaching change is made, no matter who the new coach is - especially when there is a change in coaching style.

I'm sorry, I mean no disrespect, but I for one HATE when people say that the year after Keno left would have been a for sure trip to the NCAA or NIT, or a legit 20 win team (nobody knows that!). I cannot see that statement being further from the truth. Mid-majors catch lightning in a bottle all the time (damn near every year) and the next year fall back to earth (see 05-06 George Mason)

I'm not sure if that is true. I heard a rumor some of the boosters were willing to help restructure a deal, but certain people in high places would not let it happen. It would have depended on where the money came from.

Plus, you have to figure revenue built off of the 2007-08 season and the new national exposure would have increased marketing. The 2008-09 season would have been better (for sure NIT, maybe NCAA) if Keno would have stayed - that team was still good, we were just going through a coaching change. Who knows where we would have been today.

As I stated in a previous post if we sold out 7,000 seats with an average of 16 games at $20.00, it would equal 2,240,000. That would not include TV contracts, merchandize and concessions. If Keno was able to build a winning tradition, it may have been worth the 1 million.

Ferentz had some great incentives in his contract and that made me wonder if UNI might do the same.

Hey, it's a tough business and you need to get what you can, when you can.
I recently read something about several formerly successful big name coaches that were now either assistants or at small schools. Some very recognizable names. I remember Tom Penders as one and Larry Eustachy as another. I guess you could even have had Tom Davis on the list.

C'Mon guys.... Look at the bright side...at least they want come after our current coach for a
while. So, the new recruits are safe from bamboozulment unless MP2 really botches things up in the next two years. There's always a "silver lining" in all things. Be grateful.

Are both numbers base pay?

Any performance incentives?

A bump from 159k to 290k seems like it would be hard to justify to the biology professor that can't get the money for a new microscope.

Exactly, he knew nobody at Drake makes more than the guy with a PHD in Russian Lit, so you strike when the iron is hot. If you think Phelps wouldn't do the same in a split second if given the chance your nuts.

Im wondering when Jacobsen will head out of town. If UNI does anything in the tourney this year look out. Of course the public schools can soak the taxpayers to keep a coach so he's making a little more than Keno did.

Possibly his leaving was influenced by his father's treatment at Iowa.

Fans, supporters, and schools can be very fickle in their love affairs with their coaches.

A raise like that would probably have put the athletic department in receivership.
If his salary had doubled, it probably wouldn't have kept him and would have put a real strain on the athletic budget.
The side effects in all the other departments would probably have caused some real problems for the University as well.

The DM Register had a paragraph saying the Drake tax return for 2007-2008 shows they paid Keno $188,295 for that season
Providence supposedly offered him 1 million per year for 7 years.
That would cause a lot of people to make the move.
The article also says they added a year to his contract after last season.

Of course, they might try to take it back after this season.
