I've not posted for some time because I wanted to let the season sink in a bit. Yes, the overall record was not that great, but the more I think about it the happier I am. Why? Well, for one, Drake was competitive in almost all conference games this year. Not the case last year. Drake lost two tough road games by a last second shot to Bradley and ILState. The same against Evansville at home (which Drake always seems to do). Home many games did Drake get blasted on the road last year? Also, the tourney game was painful, but UNI put the same hex on Bradley and WSU as they did to Drake and WSU and Bradley are, arguably, better teams. The game that upsets me the most is Iowa. How we lost that I don't know, not to mention SIU-Eddy, but it is clear Phelps made adjustments once conference began and they played better. It was posted here by others several times that the coach's job is to put his team in position to win each game. How many times did Phelps do that this year? A lot. Also, as someone said, Phelps is recruiting great talent and great student athletes. He is doing a lot of things right and I cannot be upset with him.

The only real beef I have is the rebounding. Wow, that is not good, and hopefully he will figure that out.

I heard during a Big East tournament game the announcers talking about a player's best statistical game this season. The other announcer said I bet it was against Providence and they both laughed. (by the way, it was against Providence)

By this standard, Dr. T's tenure at Drake was a failure. Were you one of those who were claiming he had "lost" it back in 05-06?

Remember the same comments about Dr. T.

And I agreed with it then too. You need to show progress in the third year (i.e. winning record, postseason) and results in the fourt year (i.e. NCAA tournament).

Remember the situation Dr. Tom came into was much different than the situation Phelps came into. Dr. Tom took over a team that was 10-20. Phelps took over a team that was 28-5.

In the coming year, let's do all we can to encourage and foster a sense of excellence. We have to first expect it
and stop making excuses of why we can't or don't have. Use what we have and maximize that. That's the starting
point. Yes, 10-11 will be brand new with many new challenges seen and unseen. The learning curve is going to be
steep for everyone involved. In many ways, we will be starting all over. MP3 (Mark Phelps - 3rd year coach) is the
captain of this ship.....

Agreed McB. There's no basketball being played at this time. It is a time to dial back and
save it for when it counts. The mob mentality was generated by things on the court and
the decisions made to inflame the situation. Wow, life would be great if it was all peaches
and cream but we know that's not true....A good healthy debate is where there is point-
counterpoint. Most of the negativity can be eliminated by one thing..... WINS !!!
For some.... 7 conference and 14 overall WINS is enough.....

Excellent question Drakey. You can not fear taking the opportunity for success when presented.

I agree...it is an excellent question.

The buck stops with the coach. He is the leader and is judged by the teams success. His adjustments were not exactly on at all times.

The athletes have to share some of the responsibility. They played inspired basketball during that stretch, which was not the case in all games.

I have tried to share the truth here but some posters on this board "can't handle the truth". Yes, there is more than one answer but the real answer is a "constant" and traceable. It has it's own basketball DNA (Don't Know Anything).

Nobody is asking for a "quick fix." I think a lot of people think this team should have been better than it was. I think that was proven during the 6 or 7 game stretch when they WERE good. Why didn't this team play at that level all year? Why couoldn't they maintain that level of play once they reached it?

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but I'm not opposed to what MP is trying to do, build a team from scratch.

The cupboard wasn't full when he got here. I'd rather give him time to build a team instead of trying to find a quick fix.

If you look at UNI, they have built a program. They lose seniors this year, but we all saw what the "next" five could do against Bradley and WSU. I think that is what we need to do.

That being said, it also means we are in for some growing pains (maybe alot of growing pains). I think the freshman class (not just the freshman player) this year had more talent than any freshman class I can remember. And I think next year sounds like a good group as well.

We also have a coach who just finished year 2. The magical year was coached by Dr. Tom. Those kids didn't need much coaching, and the Keno is still trying to prove himself as well.

So I'm not sure regardless of the coach, this year would have been any different. I'll take another year like we just had if we show progress. We had a coach once that went for the quick fix, and 4 of the kids weren't able to play when second semester rolled around.

I'm looking glass half full, at least for another year.

Don't want to run anyone off. We're family. Just need to work on what we have and make it better.

Some on this forum believe one of these individuals is hopeless. My point is that I think they are in the
same boat. True, one may be physical and one may be mental but they are both workable. They just need
more time...Right?

One thing I agree on here is that changes need to be made. HARD CHANGES !!!
I personally think two guys on the Bulldog bench represent the same situation.
