I hate to say this but UNI's Freshmen appear to have passed Drake's. Not a good sign for the future.

One big difference.....2 of the 3 UNI freshmen who played a lot this season were redshirt freshmen.....all of Drake's guys were true freshmen. Drake didn't have the luxury of being able to redshirt any of the guys to allow them to bulk up, get stronger and learn the system. I imagine that if we had been able to redshirt guys like Simons, Hawley, VanDeest, Uhlenhopp, people would be talking about how good they were next season in their "freshman" year.

Simons picked it up down the strech run of the season. Get some meat on their frames for defense. Combine that with some promising explosive offensive games, I'm excited for the future.

Well, Hawley and Simons didn't have multiple all-conference players in the lineup to clear up space for them, for one thing.

I agree Van Deest has really progressed during the season. Hawley and Reece showed improvement. Ben S. got lost somewhere after the first 10 games. Hopefully he will get his mojo back. He has the family pedigree to really understand the game. Now with two #1 recruiting classes it's up to the coach to teach these players to step up to the next level. Teaching a little more aggressiveness on offensive rebounding would be nice. I don't recall that we were burned on that many fastbreaks when the Davis's had them crash the boards. I think they created several W's with their rebounding style. Maybe Ohl could help out on that part.

Other than VanDeest, UNI has the edge right now. It will be interesting to see how UNI's seniors preform after the loss of the seniors. The loss of senior leadership could effect them greatly, which may even it out.

I don't think so. So far, VanDeest has been the best freshman of the bunch. Because we lose 50% of our rebounding and 47% of our scoring... there is a lot of room for the current(and very talented) freshman to step up and bulk up. I think the rivalry will get bigger over the next few years.
