No, you (or your word :"Rest of Us" ) understand it but maybe not see it. "Not having enough balls to go around" could mean many things but what I am referring to the notion that two years of the "Top Recruiting MVC Classes" will produce great expectation by those being recruited. No doubt the freshmen this year think O' first and D' secondly.
This is reflected in our MVC Defensive stats.... Yes, with the exception of SVD's block shots, there's not much D' from
the other pups.....

I disagree with a lot of what you spew Raw, you bark just as loud if not more than the veterans around here while you try to defend yourself against constant naysayers. Just a couple things you highlighted:

"Dr. Tom under-utilizing players" -- Might as well give credit where credit is due. It was Dr. Tom who set JY to focus on scoring from the 2 instead of playing the point. That move alone allowed him to "utilize" Al Stewart, Ajay Calvin, and Klayton Korver in space to give us a chance against the more physical SIU's and Creighton's at the time. With a more athletic team on the court, he could properly execute his different presses. And look where we ended up discovering our MVP Adam Emmenecker. If JY was our Point Guard, would he really be a contributor for us?

"Dr. Tom and Keno knew how to mix it up." -- This is one thing that I agree with you completely on. I strongly feel that part of the second half collapses we had last year and at the start of this year was stemming from teams getting comfortable facing the matchup zone and pulling off runs in the second half once they figured it out. What we've seen in the presses this year is discouraging in that it happens very rarely, and it's used to slow the game down instead of raising the tempo to force bad decisions which lead to turnovers. If we could throw something else to keep an offense on their heels adjusting to the different defensive pressure, I think we'd have a slightly better record because of it. The offensive droughts are still an issue though.

"They were laid back" -- Laid back in what aspect? Their demeanor on the court during games? Straight from Josh Young's mouth he has said that Coach Phelps runs a much more laid back practice/environment compared to what the Davis' did. Keno would run the players ragged installing wrinkles in defensive sets during practice. Phelps may be more fiery in the box on gameday, but have you seen the Valley refs? It would take a saint not to get worked up over the bodies of work the MVC refs display.

But you're also comparing a veteran-laden team that had bonded over 4 years and knew how to play to each other's strengths with a highly touted freshman class with only a couple senior leaders. Yes our roster is physically talented, but this is their first run through the MVC gauntlet. We don't have rare stars like Derrick Rose who took the NCAA's by storm with the physical and mental tools of a veteran on our team. Once this young team has developed the mental toughness for Division I basketball, they'll really be able to show what they've got. That comes more from experience more than coaching.

ENOUGH ABOUT THE PAST THOUGH...the UNI Panthers come to town on Wednesday and we need the house a rockin! While I don't know you guys personally, I hope you're all as loud at the games as your are in person!

However, Rawdog, I really don't understand your continued criticism of Coach Phelps, and all this talk of "friendly fire". Coach has done a great job since early January of bringing along a young team, in my opinion and that of many others on this board. Don't take this as a personal attack, but is there a personal agenda here that I'm not aware of? And this talk of not enough balls to go around next year. JY and AT have together taken 414 shots this year, over 30% of the team's total. So what does not enough balls to go around next year supposed to mean? again, is there something here that the rest of us don't understand?

l think you hit it right on. That's what make the board interesting is everyones difference of philosophy and how it affects the outcome of the games. Drakey is right also. l think the last month has been great. Noone likes to lose, but even in the losses l see more postive.

OK....problem with Raw? For clarity and the record, I did not like Dr. Tom's "forty minutes of HELL" either but
he had some rhyme and reason to his system (madness, "Friendly Fire"). My first year, Dr. Tom had a better team
17-15 (athletically) than did Keno (28-5) but I thought he (Tom) under utilized "key people" at times because of his system...(.i.e) AC and KK in particular....(yes, I know KK was recovering from injuries). Keno tweaked the system and the results were what you saw 07-08. (Chemistry, flow, less substitutions, starters playing 30+ mins per game, and stretching the floor with the threat of the DEEP three ( JY, KK, JB, BC). MP2, unlike Dr. Tom and Keno, in my
personal opinion, has no rhyme or reason to his system (madness...."Friendly Fire").

In addition, Dr. Tom and Keno knew how to mix it up as skippers. Presses, man to man D' for more than 5 minutes,

HTF did I get into this pissin match? Dawg_tired is what I was with Kurt Kanaskie. You want frustration! Phelps has already nearly won more games than Kanaskie. I'll give you frustration. I have been a vocal critic of Phelps when I thought he deserved it. What's more I've done it and signed my real name. However, when I don't think he deserved it I gave him props. I don't think he deserves being criticized for the last couple of games. Players have to make the plays.

Hoosier dog put down the crack pipe...your venom is unbecoming and for a "johnny come lately" to this board to refer to it as "our" board is an overstep. You don't own the program and you don't own the board. If you can't state your opinion on basketball and not personally attack people you should STFU until you sober up.

Thanks BigBull but I can hold my own this board. Hoosierbulldog has a right to his opinions. What I express is my
opinion and what I see. BHO is not my bent for the record. I do critique the skipper on this board while most average
fans concentrate on the players and hype. I do point to areas that can be tracked and documented. 40 minutes of playing time and a possible 26 timeouts, free throw stoppage, tv timeouts, etc. should be enough for 18 -22 year old
men to catch their wind....unless they are "out of shape" or have some health problem.

Your BOARD? First, figure out whether you're a HoosierLover or a Bulldog.......

Contrary to some poster's belief....the embarrassment is losing games you should win and not knowing "WHY"
True...it can't always be the player's fault and it can't always be the coach's fault. Schools don't let the players
go when the program is UNSUCCESSFUL. The "youth thing" has been debunked...remember the 5 in a row.

The "Friendly Fire" thing has not been debunked......

Phelps coached the team to have a chance to win. He put them in a position to make plays. But he can't make the plays. Players make plays and they didn't when it was time. End of story.

I don't think this year's team is better than last year's team. I think this year's team is better coached than last year's team. I thought last year's team underachieved because of coaching. This year's team is over achieving because of coaching. Same coach...but he's grown by leaps and bounds. Had he coached last year the way he coached this year, we would have been an upper division team.

Raw, Once again Phelps blows the game! Also, please explain what you meant about not enough balls to go around next year. Are we to believe that we have some unhappy players & it will get worse next year? I didn't see or hear the game, but obviously Van Deest didn't play much because of foul trouble. This makes it very difficult for us as Eaddy becomes our back-up. Uhlenhopp sounds like he gave us some pretty good minutes but at this point he is not the player Van Deest is. What was Phelps to do? We battled down to the wire again, w/a chance to win on the road as a 10 point underdog. If you have some new wrinkles to add to the offense & defense I think you should give Phelps a call.

First, congrats to JY for breaking the scoring record. Knowing JY, yes, he would have loved the victory too..
and for those of you that say and think JY is not a clutch player.....shame on you...

The game was one for the ages. Yes, the officiating was as bad as it sounded and looked in person, on TV,
and on the radio. Yes, we missed crucial shots the whole game through. Veterans and rookies contributed to
the loss.. from the bench to the floor. Bottom line....we have to make shots in order to WIN. Those of you
on this forum that want to point fingers at 18 -22 year olds....must also point fingers at the guys in the
ties too.

The Dogs played hard. Before the season I would have given the Dogs a 15% chance to win at ISU. After the first ten games I would have given them a 1% chance. As it turns out it was a coin flip. That's a good effort.

This Bulldog team continues to play hard and Coach Phelps continues to move the program in the right direction. It's easy to be confused about what's really happening with a team when there are fewer wins than losses. But, everyone knew beore the season started that this was going to be a difficult year. In my book, it has been better than expected due to the extraordinary talent, tenacity, and leadership of Josh Young and Adam Templeton along with the impressive contributions of their younger teammates. And, this season isn't over yet!!

Go Bulldogs!

I have to agree that I thought that was pretty ridiculous and all it did was get the students more fired up to yelled at JY and he had way to much time to think about that free throw. He was off all game in my opinion from the free throw line. Everytime I see him at the line, I assume 2 points and I think the way the refs made that game really hurt his chances of making that free throw.

Agree with everything you said. I was one of the ones after the game on New Year's day in Wichita who thought the Dogs had no chance of winning 10 games. Perhaps we did get spoiled by the 5 game winning streak, but that showed what this team is capable of doing. There will continue to be growing pains this year and next, but I honestly feel this program has turned the corner. Let's not forget the 20 bleak, hopeless years under Rudy and KK. Those years truly did suck.

Key is, we are getting better. Need to close out the season strong and avoid the Thursday game in St. Louis.

This team has proven it has resolve. Coach has proven he can make adjustments and develop a team. I may have said this earlier, like December, but no one wants to see Drake on their line at Arch Madness.

Let's fire up for Wednesday. It should be a great game and atmosphere.

Dawg Tired, I am in total agreement w/this. UNI game is huge this week. They are extremely beatable, as SIU had that game in their back pocket yesterday & couldn't finish. I'm just not sure we match up w/them. If we shoot well & get an early lead we can win. If we get down & let them slow the pace & turn it into a wrestling match, we will not win.

I think it is a stretch to say a 72% free throw shooter hitting 6-of-10 is a "choke." That's pretty close to normal. Some games he'll hit 10-of-10. Some games he'll hit 5-of-10. That's just the way it goes. He's not a machine.

I was at the game. The officiating was horrible but both ways. Those guys were incompetent. The 2 quick fouls on Van Deest in the 2nd half were ridiculous when compared to the uncalled fouls. I lost track of how many 3 second calls that they missed on Odiakosa or how many traveling calls they missed on DU. Wedel did have some open looks the 2nd half but was unable to nail them. It seemed to me that we began getting too one dimensional by looking to JY to carry the load. Van Deest did not get to play enough minutes to be a factor. We began going to him early in the 2nd half, he missed a couple of shots, then picked up his 3rd and 4th fouls which sent him back to the bench. I think the lack of minutes by SVD was the key to the loss. I also thought Coach Phelps did a very good job tonight. He was in the officials face on several occasions and in the first half received a warning to stay in the coaches box after confronting an official. The team played hard we must find a way to rebound better.

USMC: Good overall assessment, in my opinion (was that a personal attack?

Our Post Defense: I seldom say NEVER, however, I do not ever recall a defense getting called for every foul while defending a Post (Odiakosa). We, of course, had to offer resistance when he would post up. Often for what seemed like forever. He is very good at Leaning and Resisting while making it appear that he wasn't. That part of the officiating was very biased. Just terrible actually. I can remember Odiakosa being called for a travel late in the second half and that's it.
We did make a nice coaching adjustment and started Fronting Him, when he would allow us to get around him. Improved strength, like a Jordan Clarke will help. Great effort out of our post defenders.

FREE THROWS:
At least two front ends of one and one's. I think we have to count missed One and One's in our %.
Bottom Line: JY or no JY, we HAVE to make 75% to win.

TURNOVERS:
One in the second half I think. 8 at half. Great adjustment.

LLOYD'S SHOT:
Bradley was not in sink. Lloyd shot that thing while coming down the court from at least 23 and 1/2 feet. Almost a running jumper. That was fortunate for them.

WE STILL HAVE A SHOT:
Even after JY's driving layup that was short, we still got back in it.
Really too bad there was so much time between JY's last two free throws.
The Jank timeout was a good call, but then to review the game clock AFTER the Time Out??
What a freakin' joke.
JY may not have made the second anyway, but the delay by the "three blind mice" didn't help. We'll never know.

I hate losing but I agree this is a much better team than last year.
Getting better as the year goes on. Last years' team didn't.

To be in a position to win on the road??
That is great progress.

UNI will be another Zoo for an atmosphere. Fire Up.

You're right. I called out JY. He describes himself in the paper as THE leader of the team. Yeah, over four years he's scored a lot of points. And yeah, he's won some games. But this year he's not the guy I want on the line to win the game. This isn't the first game he's missed critical free throws. I don't know why. I'm not saying he's a bad kid or a bad player. He's a great kid and a good player. But ICE he's not. ICE makes that shot sends it into overtime and we win. I feel for him...I really do. But he let them get in his head. I think he has doubt in his own mind when he steps up at a critical time. That makes for a miss. He's got to let all the other misses go...but he hasn't IMO.

I think we need to make a line-up change to improve our rebounding and get more shots for AT. FW last night had 5TOs and did not look confident with the ball nor did he at Bradley. We might as well move JY to the point as that is where he has spent most of his time during the 2nd half of the last 2 games. Move AT to the 3 and use BS, AH, or RU at the 4. This would give us more size and hopefully more boards. This should also get AT more 3 point attempts(he is the leading 3 pt % shooter in the conference). Just a thought.
