I recorded this game (it was on tape delay at midnight) and watched thw whole thing- so obvservations from that perspective:

i thought the rebounding was good- i know all year long we have been getting hammered on the boards- we seemes to hold our own tonight for the most part.

from the few games i have seen the last 2 years i never really thought AT was as good as was anticipited- but last night he was excellent- hitting shots and hitting the boards very impressive.

i know subbing has been an issue. still trying to figure out why BE come in in the end of games

would like to see the freshman getting more time- we have a chance to build a good foundation- but simons and hawley probably only played 6-7 minutes i am guessing

i know the season has been disappoineting thus far- but i am encouraged. we have been in almost every game but folded down the stretch. that will get better with experience.

going into season it sounded like shooting would be the strong point of this team- but the 3 point % has been bad. if we had been hitting the percentage we are capable of- we could have maybe 10-12 wins- after all austin peay is a decent team and Akron is the best in the MAC and we shouls have beat them- so we are close.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

Mc Bulldog (1/10/2010)
Excellent post, DawgTired. He's the head coach and the buck
should start and stop with him. There is also compensation ($$$) involved. I'll praise when deserved. Even in the win last night, it could have been better. We were on a 9-0 run when SIU called a timeout. Instead of leaving the 5
guys on the floor responsible for the run, he had to make a "friend fire" sub.... It was (BE). I think after that simple
move, they stormed back and got close or tied. That's the MP2 style that needs to stop.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

I was surprised Cory Parker did not get any play after the good minutes he put in against CU.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

The way the play went, I think it was called.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

Excellent post, DawgTired. That took a lot of balls on MP's part not because Wedel couldn't do it but because of the pressure he would have felt to call Young. With 7 minutes to go, looked like the same story, different game with the scoring drought. Great to see the guys step up with a big win. AT was a monster. Nice to see FW have some success, we are really going to need him to keep this going. Fox announcers very complimentary of his contribution. RW was huge on those 3's. Though minutes were not as significant, the freshmen still made contributions to the end result. I know there is a desire to keep upper clansman on the floor, but good to keep these guys engaged.

The players and MP really needed this win to build some confidence. One more win than a number of posters thought we could get and in Carbondale of all places. I know some of you are not a fan of MP's demeanor, but l like the fact he looks the same coming off the floor of tough loss or big win on the road.

One game is not a trend, but I like we played two strong road games back to back. These guys deserved a break.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

While I'm happy (and relieved for the student athletes) D won in Carbondale, let's not jump to the front of the Kool-Aid stand. Remember, D won at SIU last year as well (and we all remember last year, right?). It sounds like the pendulum is starting to shift back in the right direction for the alma mater...which is more encouraging than what we've seen over the last 5 weeks. We'll see if this continues against SMS.

Speaking of which, I will be there. Would be great to see any/all of you. I'll probably just sit behind one of the baskets. Come say 'hey' or maybe we can grab a postgame victory(?) drink at WestEnd or some other 'fine'(?) establishment. If I get into town early enough, I'll try to make a pregame appearance there (no promises).

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

DU has outrebounded:

Austin Peay 37-32
N Dakota 37-36
S Dakota 39-38

plus CU and SIU

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

DUBulldog (1/10/2010)
Drakey (1/10/2010)
I can't remeber. It feels better waking up to a WIN.....
I agree that we shouldn't get overly excited about one game (although I think a change actually began in the Creighton game). It's not just the fact that AT was given more minutes. The Dogs played more aggressively against SIU than they have all season. The fact that we had 10 or 11 offensive rebounds is amazing given MP's usual strategy of getting back on a missed shot to set up the zone defense. I also think he may have found a point guard in Wiseler who can actually penetrate thereby opening up better shots for our wings.

Also, given the criticism that MP has received on this board after most games, I think it's only fair that he get some praise after a game that was well-coached.

Let's hope the improved play continues against Missouri State.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

McBulldog, You are absolutely right & I would be one of them. It's good to get the first MVC victory on the board, especially on the road. I'm still scared by the Kanaskie years when Drake couldn't beat anyone on the road. It's also good to win a conference game before Iowa (currently 0-4) or Iowa St (okay, so ISU hasn't played a conference game yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose at least their first five conference games (their most winnable game in that stretch is at Nebraska)).

From just looking at the box score, it seems like Drake managed to assert their style and turn it into a slower half-court game. I did hear KRNT's pregame, and it sounded like DU was most concerned with shutting down SIU's transition game. Apparently they stopped the transition game (0 fastbreak points for either team), and they did it while still crashing the boards (11 offensive rebounds). They also held SIU to 7 points below their season average.

This was one of DU's better defensive efforts. They still need to improve on shooting percentages (SIU shot 26-55 (47.3%), but DU forced 14 turnovers and limited SIU to 5 second chance points (on 9 offensive rebounds, which is still too many).

The offense was okay. DU shot 24-52 (46.2%), which is passable although DU probably needs to shoot better than that to consistently win this year. Getting to and making shots from the free throw line kept DU in the game as they went 15-17.

DU had more rebounds 34-28. SIU isn't a great rebounding team, but it's always nice to outrebound someone, especially on the road.

Templeton was the man, simple as that. He had 22 points on 8-11 shooting (3-5 from 3) and 13 rebounds (6 offensive). He's providing the senior leadership DU has been needing.

Wedel had 14 points, thanks largely to 6-6 ft shooting. He shot 3-9 (2-7 from 3). Give him credit for hitting the go-ahead shot at the end despite a lackluster shooting night. He only played 26 minutes, so maybe cutting his playing time a little helped keep him fresh at the end.

Young had 11 points on 4-9 shooting (0-3 from 3). He hit 3-3 ft's, and had 5 rebounds. It sounds like SIU focused on stopping him, and he didn't try to force too much (although 3 turnovers is a bit much).

Wiseler had 8 points on 4-8 shooting, and 3 assists vs. 0 turnovers in 17 minutes. He looked like he did at the start of the year, which is good because Stanley also looked like the guy at the start of the year (2 points on 1-5 shooting, and 3 assists vs. 6 turnovers in 23 minutes).

VanDeest had 5 points on 2-3 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover, and 2 blocks in 28 minutes. That looks like another solid game as he continues to develop. He was only 1-3 on ft's (that's both of DU's misses), so it would be great to see him return to his early season free throw shooting.

Hawley managed a 3-point basket and 3 rebounds in 8 minutes. It will be hard for him to see the floor if Templeton continues to play well. Maybe he could see some time at the 3.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

Dawg_tired (1/10/2010)
Mc Bulldog (1/10/2010)
Message board pracks. It has been awhile for me. I really should change my login name since I have moved back to southern Illinois. I was able to go to the game tonight in Carbondale. It was great. I really can't say enough about the effort the young men put forward tonight. They could have packed it in during the stretch in the second half when we were down seven; they did not. I was very impressed with the play of Templeton. I also thought Young did a very good job of holding things together during the rough stretch in the second half; I really thought his leadership showed big this evening. It was really a great feeling to watch all the SIU fans file out at the end of the game. It was very quiet (except for those clamoring for Lowery's head on a platter). I have been fortunate to see us play two good games, this one and the one on the road at Austin Peay. I appreciate the enthusiasm (as always) from those that post on this board. I also feel your frustrations at time. I do agree that this may very well be the best coaching job from this staff in the year and a half they have been here. Let's just hope we can see more. Hope everyone has a great New Year.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

Great win Bulldogs!

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

As referenced in an earlier post, what a difference from losing to Southern Illinois freaking Edwardsville at home to beating (the real) Southern Illinois at Carbondale.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

Carlton would have looked great in blue and white but ... feed 'em beans through a tube. I know this doesn't mean that we're going to go on a long winning streak, but there's a huge difference between winless and at least one conference win. The good thing is that we've been competitive in a lot of games, so maybe a few will start going our way.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill

excellent win by the bulldogs! templeton had a fantastic game to lead the bulldogs to the victory! wedel struggled offensively for most of the game but was clutch down the stretch! i guess that is where it matters but i sure hope he can turn it on the rest of the year. it was nice to see simons hit a 3, though he got a nice roll

i think phelps is doing a much better job with his substitutions; and it shows.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill
Drakey (1/9/2010)
puttheDbackinDrake (1/9/2010)
Great win for the young Dawgs.

Phelps has done something no one else has ever done at Drake, win back-to-back at Carbondale! 2 more wins than the Davis' combined. Templeton was great tonight. They had no match-up for him but he played w/intensity the entire time. I thought Wiseler played a great game tonight. I really liked how we spread the floor tonight when he was in there & let him penetrate. He's not fast, but he was able to get to the hoop & either finish or dish. It reminded me of a pretty good point guard we had a few years ago! How do we play like this & win at Southern but we can't beat anybody at home? Southern kept hitting shots & we kept matching them.

RE: Drake-Southern Ill
Drakey (1/9/2010)
puttheDbackinDrake (1/9/2010)
Great win for the young Dawgs.

Phelps has done something no one else has ever done at Drake, win back-to-back at Carbondale! 2 more wins than the Davis' combined.
