Sorry 1972dog, after Keno announced, I too was on the Internal Bandwagon, "why mess with a system that worked", I thought. Then I got straightened out by three graduating seniors. A big FAT NO!!!! That is not what the players wanted. Guess SHC listened to the players again!
Wrong again on GG. If you go internally after Coach John went to Iowa State, Dan Callahan would have been the pick, not Gus Guydon. Coach Callahan was way more qualified than Gus. DC had a nice career at Morningside College in Sioux City.

As Phelps fills the cupboard and builds a program where we re-load, hopefully we won't have years where, our numbers and our talent, are just not sufficient to compete at the highest level.

Not only that but didn't SHC work for Gene Smith (ex-Iowa State) ... and he went where? ... around the same time. Was it Ohio State or something? Phelps, an asst. from Ohio State, and another asst. from TN were considered the three top "new" head coach candidates in the country.

I don't know where everyone gets the idea that rawdawg is a Drake student? I don't believe rawdawg is a Drake student.

I disagree. I feel SHC had Phelps chosen from the word go. There was no true venting process. What are players supposed to say when SHC introduces him to them as her friend. Remember, these are 18-22 year olds hoping to stay on the good side of the coach/administration.

Is there any evidence that they were friends? Everybody talks about both of them being at Arizona State, which is true, but.......Sendek was named coach at ASU on April 3, 2006, not sure when Phelps was officially brought on as an assistant there.....Sandy was named AD at Drake on May 30, 2006. Not much overlap there at ASU.

Ya think? Give or take a few days when Keno made his intentions known to SHC, SHC/Maxwell weren't interested in doing a *real* search that might require a thoughtful hiring process.

Your comments about DU and SHC "doing this to him" are incorrect. It was made very public that the players had a big say in who the next coach was going to be. Josh and the other leaders picked Phelps over Gary Close.

My roommate suggests that maybe those same people can re-vote ASAP.

I stand corrected. You're right. There are times in our lives that we have to live with the decisions we make.
This is definately one of those times. This decision will make men of boys for sure. I guess that settles it.
You get what you ask for. I don't remember anyone mentioning the candidates and how they faired during the
vetting process.

Thanks ArmChair... I receive that from you...Drake's history is what it is. You're right. Once in a lifetime
experience for sure 07-08. Success is addictive. In sports and in your words "the real world" Athletics help
you in the real world. You know as well as I, that there are some bosses out there who are there because
of "who they know" and not necessarily "what they know". "Real Life" can be a batch too. Thanks for
your wisdom.

Rawdawg: I'm sorry about the anger thing that you are experiencing. The rest of us have had touches of the same, no question about it. I know you are sticking up for your buddies who had great success two years ago. Changes in personnel and a new coach who had to follow one that most everyone liked makes it even tougher. Just wait til you graduate from Drake and get into the real world, then you can say you have faced real adversity and frustration. It's a jungle out there.
Hey, you are blessed that you go to experience a great year while you were in college. Most of us didn't.

I'm not convinced that JY is 100% healthy. There are a lot of factors that contribute to his drop in scoring. I think his health has definitely played a role. Recently, he hasn't shown us the acrobatic lay-ups or as many mid-range shots that he has in the past. (things that require a healthy ankle) He even admits that he's feeling it.

Because of his stellar reputation, defenders key in on him more. Every shooter has droughts and good times. As noted earlier this year, JY was in a slump. The coaching staff helped out by working on some of his mechanics that had gotten out of whack. A nagging injury can mess up your shot because you try to adjust and avoid discomfort. The absence of Adam Emmenecker hurts too.

Many times inside sources have a very strong allegiance towards the subject (JY in this case). It is all too easy to look for one person or thing to assign all the blame towards. I'm not blaming anything except unfortunate situations and a little bad luck.

I don't believe Phelps is telling JY not to shoot. That doesn't make sense. Everyone is welcome to take good shots. After two surgeries, and a great Soph year, Josh is not the same. He is not as quick off the dribble as he used to be. Not a bash, we all love Josh, just a fact after two surgeries. Missing free throws and open jumpers are not the coaches fault. JY needs to get his confidence back, and I know him pretty well. Being the man on a team is tough. He draws more defensive attention than anyone, and at under six feet tall, his defender usually has several inches on him.
Wedel has the green light, I have to believe Josh does too.
Not beating anyone up here, just so much to be positive about.
We could have tanked, many teams with our record would have.
The second time through no one is going to want to play us. In fact, that might be the case right now. Good job boys.

RW is not proven in the Valley. JY is. Every coach in the Valley has been torched by JY over the last three years.
Greg McDermott (ISU) owes MP2 a big thank you for his "friendly fire" defense. The majority of the coaches in th Valley have drank the "JY - Kool-Aid". MP2 has not and the results are telling.

it was really encouraging to see we battled last night. creighton is a very good team (especially at home), although their record does not really reflect that. I and probably along with a lot you other fans thoughts we would lay down when we got down by as much as 14 I believe early in the second half. But we competed (finally) down the stretch. Creighton also shot very well from 3 point range, Wragge being their leader from the arc (ive seen him play, watch for his name in the coming years). However, we were still able to battle to the end on the road (wish that layup would have went in). One thing worth noting tho is my dad (who lives in the omaha area) was watching the game and told me JY was not the same player he was two years ago. He said he was hesitant and tentative. And this is coming from an outsiders point of view since he is not a fan of drake basketball. I just ask that coach lets the players have confidence and rise up and knock it down. Lets do what keno did, ask them to rebound and play D hard and then give them the freedom to take shots within striking distance (especially RW and JY).

That is an excellent thought. We all know JY is more hesitant than he used to be, hearing it from an outside source only reinforces that even more. JY is a tremendous basketball player and the unquestioned leader of this team. What made him so unstoppable offensively a couple years ago was the green light he had shooting from anywhere. Opponents knew he could shoot it from way behind the line so they had to respect that. Respecting that deep 3 allows the opportunity to drive the basketball and penetrate the lane. Both last year and this year, this range has shrunk. JY is hesistant to shoot the 3 ball at times; probably due to Coach Phelp's system. I just wish JY would have a little bit more free reign without havving to worry about getting pulled for taking a deep shot. We can probably argue that Wedel is in a very similar situation.

First, bless your heart for your courage and faith. Your dad makes my point. MP2 (and his staff) have not only browbeat JY out of his game but others. When a shooter (scorers) has to (or is forced to) look over to the bench
after every little thing, it upsets their game. JY doesn't need MP2's approval. Style and personal confidence.
This speaks volumes about MP2 not JY, AT or anybody else on the team. Shots within striking distance? Ask the
media of 07-08 what JY's striking distance is. Again, MP2 is a phidiot.

Hard fought effort on everyone's part last night, even MP2's. I thought the shift came at 13-10
when we employed the first "friendly fire" defense. Yeah, good for new faces like Cory Parker
and that will add to the expectation of another player's playing time and may expand the rotation numbers.

Dana's substitution pattern makes MP2 look like a genius. I'm not into "moral victories". That's just another
way to say "you lost" but you tried. You don't get a Nobel Prize like BHO though.

Still troubled by sitting AT for so long. AT needs to regulate himself. Let him foul out. CS had a good game.
In reality, CS is only a sophomore at the D1 level. He's still learning too. The only other experienced players
at D1 level and MVC in particular is JY, AT, and BE. I still believe the worse thing for JY's career has been MP2.
His philosohy and style is very prohibitive. We need to put an effort into getting better looks for maybe the
leading scorer (JY) in DU history.

If we can get excited about a "tough lose", this may be it. Let's gear up for SIU.

Glad to hear the bulldogs put up a fight tonight... so far this season I've had to be thankful that I grew up 20 min from KU so I have someone to cheer for and watch win. I still believe in these bulldogs, especially if Phelps can start leaving our hottest players on the floor. The other night when Hawley was hot, scored all our points, then rode the bench for the rest of night was rough on me. Also good to hear Cory Parker is getting some quality minutes!

I am glad that they took some steps forward tonight. BTW, I hope Adam's nose is ok. I'd hate to see him have to wear the Lambier mask the rest of the year.
I just hope that this progress, such as it were, is not followed by another painful regression.

Cory Parker did a nice job in the 7 minutes he played. He's not real athletic but seems to work very hard.

it was a good battle by the bulldogs.

wedel needs to start hitting some more shots, though his steal total was nice. it would be nice to get something out of simons; he is in such a slump right now. we all know he can shoot.
