NINE assists. Only nine assists with 70 points means poor ball movement. This in addition to rebounding will surely be a focus in practice leading up to Friday. It will be interesting to see how the road trip goes. Some teams are better road teams than at home. This could be the cause with this club.

RE: Iowa State
dn411 (11/18/2009)
I'm a hawk when I'm not a Bulldog. Drake was simply outmatched physically, and ISU was red-hot from 3-pt range. The only way Drake can hang with them is if Drake is hitting outside shots and ISU is not. That would allow Drake to pack in the defense around Brackens.

I only wish that Coach Phelps would be a little more animated on the bench, but that's just not his style. I think the crowd could play off of that a little bit. I also wish he'd work the officials a little more, but again, that's apparently not his style. That might also help get the crowd riled up a little bit at certain points in the game.

Players feed off of the energy of the crowd, but to some extent, the crowd also feeds off the energy of the players and coaches.

Not saying he should be a stark, raving lunatic on the bench like Dick Fick (a few of you might remember him), but I'd like to see a little more emotion out there.

RE: Iowa State
BulldogJT (11/18/2009)
DUlawdog (11/18/2009)
All good thoughts (except Baller, who I dislike intensely)
For those that weren't too concerned about coaching - were you actually at the game? Granted, the second half was loads better. But wow, what a bad gameplan going into the game. We complain about rebounding, but you can tell the kids are trained to start running back down the court as soon as a shot goes up.

Look, I'm not much of a coach hater (just look at last year when I was the only one defending him), but Coach P needs to step up his game - fast.
i actually disagree with this, i really liked his game plan, dont let brackins beat you, double down on him to force him to get rid of the ball. also by playing at a fast tempo it got us some open looks and got them going fast which also limits brackins touches on the block. as far as crashing the boards i like it just not against iowa state, they had a huge height and speed advantage so by crashing it wasnt going to get us that many more boards but it would for sure create some 3 on 3 or 2 on 1 coming back at us which would not be good.
Fair enough. But I think its also easy to cop out and say, "oh, we're young, so...". The fact remains that young and talented doesn't have to equal disorganized and unplanned. I think the defensive plan was decent, I agree, but there didn't seem to be a plan on offense.

While we talk about the youth of the players and the talent of the players, I just think that we need to see more leadership coming from Phelps during the games to better utilize this talent.

I think most of us can recognize a well-coached team. Drake is not a well-coached team. No way. However, I think Phelps has it in him to be better and I just would like to see that. BDJT - you really think Drake looked like a well-coached team? I'm just trying to bash Phelps, I just have higher expectations for him than what he's shown thus far.

The talent is there, the will to win is there, hopefully the youth will become better channeled into discipline. I confident it will - but I'm not going to give Phelps a free pass just because he's dealing with 18 yr olds.

RE: Iowa State

DUBulldog (11/18/2009)
Drakey (11/18/2009)
Actually, if you are in the bottom half of your high School class you need a 20 on your ACT to get into ISU. I don't think in all the years I've been watching college basketball, I've seen a more wussified defense. I would not have a problem with Van Deest fouling out against Brackins. Brackins will beat him 10 out of ten times. Coach's substitutions did look wierd, but for some reason I felt that, unlike last year, he was trying different combinations to see who could do what. I'll give him that. He appears to have grown as a game coach -- fewer of the beginner mistakes from last year i.e. idiotic time outs. Although he is not perfect, he seems to be better in-touch with this team than he was with last year's.

CONCERNS
I am worried that all of us, myself included, keep thinking "I can't wait 'till next year..." and I hope the players and coach don't have the same mentality. I am worried that we will have a hard time picking up more than 5 wins in the Valley.

OTHER THOUGHTS
* ISU is a good, not great team, and we never had a chance. That bothers me.
* This was the first game I watched this season, and it was the first game (in a very long time) that I watched us lose and I didn't feel bad or get depressed. Very Strange.
* We need to land a power player for the low post, and that's going to be hard when our end-of-season record this year will have very few "W's."

RE: Iowa State

Drakey (11/18/2009)
Dawg_tired (11/18/2009)
Baller didn't go to ISU...DMACC maybe. Last year, the criticism was justified. We had a team with a significant amount of talent returning and Phelps chose to institute a system and coach in a manner that did not take advantage of the talent and skills of those players. That's over.

This year we have a team that is comprised of a bunch of Freshmen, a transfer, a good guard who is always injured, and a couple of role players. There is no reason to think this team will be particularly good. They have done some things that look good to me. I liked the defensive strategy at the beginning of the game. I like the limited traps and pressing. Phelps is trying to figure out what will work best with these guys. I don't think it is realistic to think he should have that figured out two games into the season.

If you saw the two teams on the floor last night it is not realistic to think Drake should have played even with ISU. I think if they played again in two months it would be closer. The bulldogs have some players, and they are missing some players. That will presumably be taken care of next year. Realistically we should be shooting at 2011-2012.

RE: Iowa State

Dawg_tired (11/18/2009)
The substitution pattern stinks especially for a young team. Wedel, Young and Templeton should be on the floor 35 minutes each. Simons 30. Vandeest 25. And down from there until they figure out how to find their arse with both hands. Subbing with no strategy is insane. No continuity, no learning, little improvement. Watch the Keno tapes coach. NCAA with seven players.

I understand the concern and also Big Bull's earlier comment. I think there are a couple of things at work here:
1. Early in the season you need to give your veterans a chance to "lose" their playing time. Before Seth VD and Reece U start taking all the minutes I think it is fair to let Bill E have a chance to show whether he can be this year's Alex White.
2. Early on, coaches often like to reward good practices with playing time in games. We don't know who is shining in practice or who needs a kick in the rear, that might be reflected in playing time.
3. Even though we see substitutions affecting "momentum" and potentially the outcome of games, coaches may be trying to put players into certain situations to see how they handle it. It's November, not February.
4. Players who look like they are doing well from a fan perspective may be completely screwing up what the coach wants them to work on.

I don't think the "Keno tapes" are relevant to this team. We have newbie central, Keno had players who had been together for 4 years.

RE: Iowa State
Dawg_tired (11/18/2009)
The substitution pattern stinks especially for a young team. RW gets hot the 2nd half so take him out. JY was in a groove the 1st half so take him out. l don't care if he has a hip pointer he started the game, so let's him play. 3 off boards all by the same guy AT. 2 guys guarding a wing what don't you guys understand about D you have to move your feet and want to get to your next rotation. Simons great off game now lets put some energy into playing some defense. Seth biggest guy on the team foul somebody at least let them know you are on the floor. Guards figure it out you have to play some D --- JY had 3 fouls cuz he was playing D. Sock had it right if we don't off rebound we are 1 and out. lt is a game of scoring which relates to both ends of the floor. lt's time for the high school harry's to figure out it's college ball not high school. And the 3 man weave out front with Simons and the 2 guards give me a break Simons can't handle the ball. Get 3 guards or someone who can handle it and get Simons low where he can reboung or pop out for his step away 3. Like Dawg said give the best the minutes so they can get in a flow. l felt sorry for BE he gets stuck and no guard comes to get the ball and has to burn a timeout and then gets his butt chewed. lt's time to play some college basketball boys. . We all talk about how good we will be in the future. Well lets not throw away a season for some valuable experience. These kids have the tools to play well this year. There l vented and feel better now.

RE: Iowa State

Dawg_tired (11/18/2009)
Baller didn't go to ISU...DMACC maybe. I am looking at each game to see if there was improvement and I think the team looked better against ISU than when I last saw them. On defense they seemed more aware of their rotations and were quicker getting to their spots. On offense they recognized a need to develop a scoring threat in the paint and ball movement was decent. There is still a lot to work on, which is to be expected of a young team.

On defense I see the need for players to work on these things:

1. If you think you are working hard, you are not. You need to put in a sustained level of intensity and concentration that far exceeds the previous level you played.
2. It's not just about sliding your feet and staying with your man. You have to use your body to fight for and hold position on the floor. You have to use your forearms to impead the player's movement. This applies to off the ball defense as much or more than on the ball.
3. Contesting a shot is not simply raising your hands up. You need to extend your entire body into the player and contest the release point or interfere with the shooter's line of sight.
4. Off the ball defense is not simply about staying between your man and the basket and the ball in 1 or 2 pass away technique. It's also about recognizing the passing lanes and interfering with the direction of the ball.

You can find similar issues on offense:

1. You do not have the luxury of catching the ball and looking around to see if you are "open" before you shoot. You need to recognize that you have a moment of space to release a shot as the ball is coming to you, get your feet set to shoot and your hands in a position to release the ball in rhythm.
2. You need to protect your space to shoot especially in the paint. You have to keep the ball away from your opponent, extend your elbows and use your forearm to shield the ball. In the paint, you cannot simply turn to the basket and shoot with the ball in front of you.
3. Movement away from the ball is vital. Movement is not making a jab step fake one way, running four steps to a spot and returning to your old spot. You need to cut hard to the basket to create a threat and get your chest into the defender to force him back so that when you come back to the ball you have created space. You need to do this with your whole body and not your hands.
4. Passes must be directed to the spot where the player is going to end up, not where he is.

Last night I saw young players making all of these mistakes almost every time down the floor. I also players learn from these mistakes. There were plenting of examples that the staff will be able to review when they look at the game film.

From a win-loss standpoint, November could be a rough month, but it does not mean the team is not good, the players aren't learning or the coaching sacks. Unfortunately it means that with so many newbies on this team the only way they are going to really learn is by having the opponent do to them what they need to do back. I saw this start to work last night:
1. In the first half, Reece U got backed down under the basket to give up an easy 2. In the second half he stepped into the passing lane and deflected the ball creating a turnover. He also had a nice hard foul that prevented a lay up.
2. David S "stayed with his man" and sometimes trailed him all the way to the basket early on, but by the end of the game he was body-to-body with Colvin and using his forearm to slow the first step move.
3. The team got killed on the glass, but early in the 2nd half, Seth VD had a body on Hamilton, pinned him outside the baseline, grabbed the board and drew Hamilton's third foul.
4. Ben S figured out that "being open" can mean jumping over or running by your man who is guarding you as you feather a shot through the net. I think the second half was a major "Aha" moment for him on offense and I look forward to the day when he gets one on defense.
5. Aaron H had a couple of potential "Aha" moments on offense as well as he elevated over his man for clear looks at the basket. Unfortunately he had a tendency to drift at the height of his jump and flick the ball instead of squaring his shoulders and concentrating all the way through the follow-through of the shot. I have no doubt he will get it figured out.

Overall, I don't see a glass half full or half empty. I see a pitcher overflowing with water that is slowly being poured into the glass. I look forward to February when I anticipate the water in the glass will be near the rim.

RE: Iowa State

stance
defense

RE: Iowa State

Baller didn't go to ISU...DMACC maybe.
