I completely agree with you on the problem of trying to matchup on the weakside wing. Poor Ben S, Aaron H and AT are trying, but to drop down into the low block for weakside help and then try to fly out on the cross court pass is virtually impossible. If they had a bigger presence in the low block defensively they would not have to provide so much support in the key and could cheat into the cross court passing lane, making the defense much more effective.

It sounds like they are at a point where they need to sell out in shutting down the interior and give up the weak side 3. That sucks as well (we saw a lot of this under Dr. T), but at least you can shut down the middle (hopefully) and are in rebound position. I also would like to see the guards get more involved on the boards. Did the 1s and 2s get any rebounds in the game?

I am confident the coaches will change what is not working. Last year, Coach P tried to put in his ASU Princeton based offense and it sucked early. As the year went on, he scrapped those patterns and basically was running an abbreviated version of the flex since that's what the players were used to. I don't know if this team is built for m2m, the 3s and 4s are not strong on the ball on the perimeter and with no dominant 5 to control the lane it would likely lead to a highlight real of driving dunks. The other solution is to get aggressive with traps. You get exposed, but can also create turnovers, which is where it sounds like the focus of the D needs to be.[/quote]

l agree Gordon that our 3's and 4's are not strong on the ball, but at least try and change things up some. lt doesn't take much of a coach to figure that we will play the matchup all up the time. At least we would be looking at the basket for a rebound instead of having our back to it. Getting back to basics of m2m with ball u man theory 2 passes away and deny 1 pass away could afford weak side help on the driving dunks. lt's hard to say just watching them on net. One isn't at practice to see how really quick and what their desire is to play D. The guards didn't do much as far as wanting to get in and rebound. They could easily send the off guard, but to me that is just common BB knowledge. l do agree we miss Alex he at least would knock someone down if they came down lane. l think the only one who physically mature enough is AT. Last year we had Bucky, Hem, Alex and Adam, so it will still be a problem most of the year. lt will definitely be a growing a year with the fruit to be picked in a year or 2.

I miss Alex White. I really wish he had redshirted his first year at Drake so he could play this year. He'd be the interior muscle and defense Drake lacks right now. Drake is relying on young guys who lack strength and D1 skill for interior defense, and I'm not sure there's a defensive scheme to compensate for that. I remember Keno saying defense has to be built from the inside out, and Saturday showed us what happens when a team is defensively soft inside. The best option might be to just pack the middle and give up a bunch of 3's, which is better than what they did Saturday in giving up a bunch of 3's and dunks. This might be why Coach Phelps says this team is built to run; if the other team slows it down and starts working it inside offensively, Drake is in trouble.

The interior defense is the worst I have ever seen at Drake.

Seriously? Dr.T's first year with Josh Powell at center is the worst I have ever seen. He covered it up with an intense full court press to create turnovers, but when they got into the half court and got it inside there was no stopping it.

My guess is that he won't play. You don't want him to run differently bc his hip hurts, and injur himself worse. I suppose if it's really minor, he might be back, but that's a pretty quick turn-around for such a painful injury.

I saw him walking around the Court on Sat. and he didn't have a limp or seem in pain. I know that doesn't mean a lot, but it means that its not too severe.

I'd be very surprised if we hear anything definite before the team comes out for warm ups Tuesday night. Even if they make a decision one way or another before then they're probably not going to say anything.

l had one in college. They hurt like hell for sure. lt all depends on how much the muscle was tore off the hip. l layed low for the next week and played the next game. l hope he has a high pain threshold.

I'm back! I know it's been forever and then some, and I bet some of you have forgotten who I am even! haha But I am encouraged to see what happens this year, and this game, while it was a loss, it's a learning experience, and I'm thinking these kids will gel very well this year and we are in for a fun ride I think! The defense seemed atrocious, especially when a guy goes for what, 37 points? C'mon, find a way to slow that mofo down! They sure slowed Wedel down when he was hot.

Wedel. That was amazing how he started the game! Imagine how he can score when you have another huge threat like Young out there? The game sounded extremely fast paced, which should be a lot of fun to watch. I ripped Phelps a new one on here, but maybe he's going to put it all together?

It was REALLY ugly!! Iowa is breaking in a new point guard (lost Jeff Peterson and Jake Kelly to transfers) named Cully Payne....will be a nice player in a few years, but will struggle mightily this year against Big Ten competition. Eric May (true frosh from Dubuque) looks to be Iowa's best player...at least tonight. Tucker and Gatens were MIA tonight. The team had no intensity...even when down by double digits. Had an advantage inside with Cole and did not take advantage of it at all. Looks like a VERY long year is in store for Iowa in Lickliter's 3rd year, and the natives are getting restless........

OK all you old farts.
Way more fun than I expected.
Typically young, new teams pass it around, and wait for someone to shoot.
We didn't even have our leader and we were able to score.
Josh will help our team defense, and due to our highly skilled young kids they WILL get it.
Not in a game or a week but over time. Very skilled.
Ask Emmenecker if you are truly interested in getting an expert opinion.
No body is a bigger Keno and Dr. Tom fan than I am, but don't give them too much credit
for being fundamental. It took them five years, and they essentially, "left the cupboard bare". I am going to assume that you are able to recognize that these kids have unusually good skills for freshmen.
Most teams worry about working one, maybe two newcomers into a lineup.
We haven't rebounded like we will. We haven't played D like we will, but we will.
I know many of you get your kicks out of being negative, but I had a ball.
I didn't enjoy watching the teams the four years prior to Emmenecker's team nearly as much as I did this bunch.
Too much ball hogging, selfishness, not enough talent, interested in their own stats, thus no chemistry. This team has chemistry like Adam's team did, and I'll take that any day, along with the skills that these kids have.
Anyway, beat me up if you want to. As former athletes from whatever level, "the older we get, the better we were", and Oh, can we give great coaching advise with our 20-20 vision.

St. Mary's was avery good team and was supposed to be a very good team. According to several Drake players that road loss gave them confidence that they could play with anybody. I'm not sure IUPUI is quite in the same league.

Drake definitely showed no ability to adjust and simply no defense. Hopefully, if Young can get back, some of that will change. The adjusting, however, is on the coaches.

Bucky was able to get rebounds even though he may have been out of position or he did not block out properly. It was just a knack for getting the loose ball. That is not going to work for most players, and there is no sign it will work with any of these players. These guys need to learn to rebound. Beyond that, four of Drake's five starters were playing their first game in a Drake uniform yesterday. Only Templeton played for Drake last year, and he only has a year's playing experience at Drake.

IUPUI could turn out to be a pretty good team; if that happens, this wasn't a bad loss at all. As long as the team continues to develop and Young returns to form, things still look good for this year. If the freshmen hit a wall about January and Young's injury lingers all year (again), this could be a long year.

One more thing. As far as rebounding goes, we improved a great deal over the Upper Iowa game. Last I knew, it does not count as a rebound when you are taking the ball out of the net.

IUPUI is going to win a lot of basketball games. Glenn can play in any league. We have 5 freshmen logging a lot of minutes in their first game. Granted, the D was lousy, but I am optimistic DU will be a tough out for any team as the season progresses.

Happy to see Coach P playing a style that fits the team. Looking forward to seeing this unfold. I feel better about what I saw yesterday compared to painful opener with Butler last year.

Well, that sucked. How? HOW could we let someone score 37 points so easily!?!?! I mean he was just walking up to the basket at the post to make those dunks. Sigh.

Ok, now for positive.

Ryan Wedel - love it. But, like Phelps said in the DMR write-up today, we had too many close-to-the-rim shots. We should NOT have to rely on JY. 80+ points should be enough

Rebounds. Better. You all know how much of an AT fan I am. (not) But boy, I was proud of him yesterday. I think he really stepped it up.

Sidenote: I can't get over how tall the Beast (VanDeest) is. It only takes him one step to get from the post to the baseline. He could guard two people at once with those arms.

I think you are out of your honk'n gourds. Stanley brings a different style to the floor with a different skill set. Nobody on this team can do what he can do. Would I like to see him "fit the mold" a little better? Yes, and I'm confident he will improve. But if someone wanted to take the time and go back through the possessions of when he was in there, I believe the team was pretty efficient on scoring. I don't want to give a scouting report BUT ... who else can do what he does? NOBODY! Maybe Velvet but he isn't playing pg. I thought Craig brought some good energy and his defensive presence was very good too.

I had a feeling there were going to be issues that needed tissues when the Dogs came out to start the 2nd half and never really pushed the ball. They laid back in the half court and never really got any contagious success the final 10 - 12 min.s. Very concerned about the lack of adjustments at both ends of the court. Though the rebounding was better ... it still sucked. If memory serves, out rebounded 28-18, right?

Could break down all sorts of things but the best way to sum up yesterday is this young team showed some improvement from the Upper Iowa game. They show a ton of promise but still have long way to go. Let's hope the light bulb comes on sooner than later ... and I mean that all the way around.

IUPUI returned 4 starters from a team that lost to Arizona State(a top 20 team) by one point in overtime.

The defense wasn't good, but Josh Young will make it a lot better. Missing the undisputed vocal leader on this team doesn't help that aspect of the game.

They are from the mid-con conference which is one of the bottom 5-6 conferences. I don't care if Josh Young is playing or not, you don't lose to a team like that at home as a valley team. No team EVER shoots almost 70 percent on the road in college basketball today. Keep drinking the kool-aid guys, but our zone defense sucked last year & it sucks again this year. We have no defense & absolutely no rebounding. Oh, & by the way, Phelps can't coach either.

im not a fan of the zone either but you know what would be worse.... watching our low post guys try to guard their stud down low one on one!!!! i dont understand why we didnt lay off the other 2 guys in the game and make them shoot, not sure either really even took a shot, if the take the 1st open look we give them then more then likely they are a decent scorer but if the hesistate its an obvious sign that they arent a scorer in which case you make them keep shooting.
