He also hit both end of a 1 and 1 with about 15 seconds left and his team up 3. Jones barely played. Templeton hit three 3's very early, then hardly touched the ball the rest of the game. He did hit a big 3 with less than a minute left to cut the lead to 1. Interesting that MOHA was 1-6 when Diante Garrett was there, and are now 2-0 without him. He's a dominating scorer in this league, but I think he dominates the ball too much.

On Sunday, it's CIO vs Granite (Young, Simons, Wiseler) in one semi-final and Coke (Emmenecker, Calvin, Clarke, Eaddy, Baryenbruch) vs MOHA in the other. I personally think Granire and CIO are the two best teams in the league, so I think the winner of that game will win it all. Games start at 5:30 at Valley High School.

RE: Capital City League

Friday’s playoff games will feature Peak Performance vs. Capital City Orthopaedics at 6:45 p.m. and YMCA vs. MOHA at 8 p.m. There will be no 5:30 game. He won't be a great player this year, but will not hurt us. He is a solid player, even as a freshman. As long as he can rebound and alter some shots in the paint, we will be fine.

Simons or Hawley (depending on who coach likes more) will be starting. Simons right now looks to be the option, but there is still a lot of time left before games, lot of change could happen. Depending on how AT looks (if he goes on a shooting slump), we could get a lineup with both starting. Both are very good for freshmen.

RE: Capital City League

I finally got to see some games. To me Smith looks like he could be a good player, but it is going to require him to completely scrap his shot and start over. I saw him take one outside shot and his form was ridiculous. He can pass and drive. Kinda Nick Grantish right now.

Simons looks like he can do everything well except maybe rebound. Looks to me like he has the potential to be a 15-20 ppg player if he develops as expected. He didn't get the ball much.

Hawley looked OK, but not ready to contribute. Jones was the same, but he's way too skinny still. Uhenhopp looked OK, but not ready to play significant minutes. Based on the stats it looks like Simons had many more scoring opportunities in the second half.

I saw AE shoot one shot, a 3 and it went in. When he took it he gave the bench a look and they were all laughing, so it sounds like something must have been going on about his shooting (or lack thereof). And yes, AE looked fabulous. I hope Wiseler is taking notes.

RE: Capital City League

According to a blogger from the Ames Tribune, here are some of the Drake stats from last night.....

Andre Calvin (ex-Drake) 27 points, 7 rebounds.
Jordan Clarke (Drake) 23 points, 9 rebounds.
Adam Emmenecker (ex-Drake) 4 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals.
Nick Grant (Drake) 18 points, 9 rebounds.
Notes: Emmenecker apparently made it a goal not to shoot the ball (I kid you not), but proved that it’s really an unnecessary part of an overall great game. I have no idea who beat who or what the scores were because I was watching only the Drake players. Here's what I saw:

Hawley: His team only had six players and he played most of the game. He took a number of shots but few went in. His shot looks good, it just does not consistently fall. He is primarily a base-line type of player. He handles the ball well, sees the floor and looks to drive base line from the wing and will often shoot a 3-4 foot tear drop over the bigs on the drive or pivot away from the defense and shoot a 10-12 foot fade away. He tried posting up a few times, but needs to work on how to establish and hold his position. His base is small and he does not give a good target. He stands too straight so it is easy for a defender to step in front of the passing lane. He also has the high school habit of drifting around the floor instead of moving to spots with strength and purpose so it is easy for him to be guided by the defender. On rebounding, he keeps his hands at his side and waits for the ball to come to him. He also has a tendency to get caught under the basket. These are all things that can be addressed in practice, but I don't see him even close to being a starter ahead of AT.
Jones: He also played lots of minutes. He still has a lot of room for improvement. There are some things that look much better than last year though. He is showing a bit of a nose for the ball on the offensive glass. He anticipates the carom and has decent timing in getting to the rim. He had a nice tip in and a couple of times was right there for the tip if the shot had missed. On the defensive glass, he tries to screen out, but does not use his upper body to keep opponents away from the ball. His hands are soft as well and so lots of balls that he could get are tipped away. He has a nice shooting touch and knocked down a 15 footer from the free throw line when he was left alone. His defensive positioning is improving, but he tends to wave at the ball instead of going up strong to block it. I think he can get to the point where he can give 3-5 backup minutes a half.
Clarke: He is in that "tweener" spot where he is too short to be a big and too slow to be a small. However, the flip side to him presents match up problems for defenders. He is very strong and can mix it up inside. Smaller defenders will struggle with his post up game. He also can take bigs out to the three and if they give him some space he can knock it down. I saw him take advantage of both type of defenders last night. His release tends to be slow, so I think it will be very important for him to develop a quick first step move to get open looks against defenders who are closing out on him at the three.
Van Deest: He is my favorite player this summer. I love his fundamentals. He screens out every single time. Even though the summer league guards rarely pass the ball he sets up in the post and gives a big target every single time. When smalls drive he flashes through the key with both hands giving a target at his chest every time even though no one passes him the ball. When his man tries to slide past him for rebounds, he gets low and puts a body on them every time. I love watching him play. He has a very nice touch. He can knock down open 10-15 footers from the baseline and the free throw line. He has multiple step and up and under moves that can get him close to the rim when there does not appear to be a lane to get there. He passes well out of the post. He does not have a one-step quick power move and needs to develop this. He also uses his hands too much on defense. He sets up well initially, but as his man makes his move he tends to put his hand on the guy's back and extend his arm. He'll get lots of holding and pushing fouls if he keeps this up. He needs to get closer to his man when the ball enters the post and use his forearm and upper body to hold his position. The coaches will work with him on all of this. I think the 5 is going to be in good hands the next four years.
Simons: I only saw him for a half and he hardly touched the ball. He was guarded by David Smith and he presented a problem for him the few times he did get it. Smith took away open looks from the 3 and Simons struggled to drive the two times he tried. He let the ball get too high in his dribble and too far away from his body so it was stolen both times. Good learning opportunity because the Valley is full of this kind of defender.
Smith: He played a lot of point and showed some nice driving ability. He goes strong to the hole and can get a shot off against bigs. He also likes to rebound. In Dr. T's system, I can see him being used a lot of ways. I don't know where Coach P sees him.
Wiseler: He sees the floor and delivers the ball. He had a number of half-court passes down the center of the floor to create fast breaks. This was an Emmenecker specialty and I did not see any of this from Stanley last year. Wiseler took maybe one shot, but I don't think scoring is a priority for Coach P's PG.
No Wedel, Young, Stanley, Templeton, or Eaddy.

RE: Capital City League

Keita44 (7/1/2009)
Are there games tonight?

Yes. His game winning tip-in off a missed free throw was pretty as he darted behind the defender with position and tipped it in over him.

Craig Stanley was in the stands. He didn't look hurt, so hopefully his injury isn't serious and he's just sitting out as a precaution.

David Smith has great size for a freshman guard. He's looks like a legit 6-3, and he looks fairly strong for a freshman. Defensively he played in the post a lot, and did a good job challenging drives to the basket. Offensively he didn't have a lot of chances. He mostly played off-guard with Sears playing point. He had a couple decent drives, but didn't look very quick. He didn't look very active tonight, not really going after loose balls or moving much without the ball on offense. I don't know if he needs to get more aggressive or if he just wasn't trying hard because it's the summer league, but he definitely increased his effort in the final few minutes when the game was on the line.

Ajay Calvin is a lot of fun to watch. He was the most athletic guy out there, and he's improved a lot since his time at Drake.

Jordan Clarke looks like a post player. He reminds me of Eaddy, except Clarke is thicker, and Eaddy is quicker and a better shooter. He's got a lot of work to do if he's going to play on the perimeter. He's not quick or a good ball handler. I think he shot about 1-4 on 3's. He spent a lot of time matched up with ISU's post Justin Hamilton (who's about 3 inches taller than Clarke), and Hamilton usually outplayed him. Clarke seemed a little soft and didn't tolerate much contact, but that could just be his summer league effort. He keeps finding ways to score, so that's a good sign.

Ben Simons is a very good jumpshooter. He hit jumpshots when he was set, he hit a pull-up 3, and he hit a nifty catch and release jumpshot after coming off a screen. He's not going to beat many people off a drive, but he did manage to beat a juco guard tonight and finished with a dunk. He showed good aggression and willingness to rebound, although he disappeared offensively in the second half. He's skinny, so hopefully he puts on weight.

Frank Wiseler ran point, but it's hard to tell how effective he was at running the offense in the summer league. His team fell apart offensively in the second half, so that's probably not a good sign. His offensive style reminds me of Emmenecker (although certainly not as effective). He didn't shoot well from outside, and took some bad shots too. He wasn't quick or shifty, but he was effective at forcing himself to the basket like Emmenecker was. I don't know if that will work against a college defense, but it worked in the summer league. I don't see him replacing Stanley in the starting line-up, but he could surprise me.

Aaron Hawley had a good game. He looked like an athletic 3/4 type player. He hit some jumpshots and played good defense in the post, so maybe he'll play some minutes at the 5 this year.

Sean Jones was definitely better than when I saw him in the summer league last year. He's stronger, quicker, and more aggressive, but he still has a long way to go. It's not a good sign that he played limited minutes when his team only had 7 guys there. I'm still hopeful that he can play limited minutes this year. Drake doesn't have any other long shot-blockers like him, so maybe he can be effective merely as a change of pace guy.

Reece Uhlenhopp played well in limited minutes. His team had about ten guys there and he had to share playing time. Uhlenhopp played a lot like Hawley except Hawley is more athletic and Uhlenhopp is thicker. He made some athletic moves and hit a few shots from out to ten feet, but that looked like the end of his range.

Seth Van Deest also had to share playing time, but looked good in limited minutes. He didn't have much chance to shoot, but he rebounded well. He definitely needs to add weight, but his fundamentals look good and he has good quickness for a big guy.

I took some pictures tonight. I'll look at them tomorrow and post anything that looks worthwhile.

RE: Capital City League

Cap City League, 6/28:

Game 1, YMCA (Templeton) beat CIO (Smith, White) by 1. Templeton scored on a rebound of a missed free throw with 7 seconds left in overtime to give YMCA a 1 point victory. Templeton looked pretty much the same as last summer....I hope he can continue the good 3-point shooting into the regular season. I'm guessing he finished with about 20, including 8 in overtime. Smith had 8-10 points, including 4-4 free throws down the stretch as CIO was protecting a small lead. He also played pretty good defense, including a couple of blocks against Templeton. Didn't do too much offensively, but he also didn't have the ball in his hands much. Wedel was a no-show for CIO.

Game 2, Coca-Cola (Calvin, Clarke) blew out Granite (Wiseler, Simons). It was a close game at half, but Granite completely stopped passing the ball in the 2nd half. Calvin had big game....I'm guessing he had 20+ points at the half, including a couple of rebound dunks. Clarke probably had 15-20 points, but I'm still not sure where you play him. Wiseler started well, but had a very poor 2nd half, and took a lot of bad shots. Simons started a little slow, then scored 13 points in about 5 minutes late in the 1st half. He didn't see the ball much in the 2nd half, and probably finished with about 20. Emmenecker, Eaddy and Baryenbruch were no-shows for Coke, Josh Young and Leonard Houston were no-shows for Granite

In game 3, it was tied 75-75, but it was all MOHA (Hawley, Jones) down the stretch, against Peak Performance (Uhlenhopp, Van Deest). Hawley probably had 20-25 points, including at least one 3, a couple of dunks, some drives and some mid-range jumpers. He moves real well, has a nice shot and knows how to play the game. Jones had 5 points, I think, in limited minutes. He seemed to be a little more aggressive tonight. I hope to see continued progress from him. Uhlenhopp and Van Deest each had 5-10 points for Peak. Uhlenhopp shot a little bit better, but still struggles with his outside shot. Van Deest hit a 3, and had a couple of nice post moves. I'd like to see him a little more aggressive on the offensive end, but he doesn't make many mistakes out there. Despite his thin frame, he had close to 10 rebounds in the game. Nick Grant and Sean Duff were no-shows for MOHA, and Heemskerk was a no-show for Peak.

RE: Capital City League

The Big Guy (6/27/2009)
I noticed some games are at the Valley High Field House. Van Deest looked pretty good, had some nice post moves, and even hit a 3. Uhlenhopp rebounded well and seemed to shoot a little better. Harrison Barnes played for the first time (he's on Peak) and he absolutely dominated the game.

Game 2, Granite (Young, Simons, Wiseler) beat CIO (Wedel, Smith, White) in the battle for first place. JY was matched up against Ryan Sears, and more than held his own. Several very nice drives to the hoop, some long 3's and some nice pull up j's off the dribble. Simons was a little off tonight, but hit a couple 3's in a row in the 2nd half. Wiseler looked to score more and hit a couple of floaters in the lane. Still haven't really seen his point guard skills. Granite led the whole game, but CIO staged a huge comeback behind Wedel in the 2nd half. I think he hit five or six 3's just in the second half. Guy can flat out fill it up. Smith had several nice drives and played some good defense.

Game 3, at halftime, Coca-Cola (Clarke, Calvin) was leading MOHA (Jones). Clarke hit a couple of 3's early, not much after that. Jones had 2 points.
