Drake's projected non-conference opponent RPI (using last year's final RPI numbers) is ranked sixth in the MVC.

Drake: The Bulldogs head to Daytona Beach to play in the Glenn Wilkes Classic, but the teams Drake most needs to play for RPI sake won’t see the Bulldogs … unless they’re all on the beach at the same time. Drake draws Georgia State, Akron, and Central Florida, while the tournament’s two heaviest hitters Auburn (SEC) and North Carolina State (ACC) steer clear of the Bulldogs. Drake also hosts a couple of random tournaments at the Knapp Center, with three of the four games in those two tourneys likely against teams with RPIs of 300 or worse.

I can't complain much about Drake's schedule, though I wish they could play Auburn or NCSt in that tourney. I don't think the Drake tourney teams are that bad either. Binghamton should be top 100 RPI, and maybe better. TX-Arlington could be at least top 200 rpi. I'm not sure if N Dakota, S Dakota, or SIU-Edwardsville are full D1 yet.[/quote]

I think RPI is irrelevant for Drake this year. With only one team from the MVC making it into the tourney the last two years there are no guarantees that will change this year. So, any post-season NCAA aspirations will be tied to winning the conference tournament. The NIT and other post-season tournaments do not appear to be so RPI focussed.

RE: 2009-2010 Schedule Preview

And speaking of Binghamton, one of their best players was arrested today for drug charges....

<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4499315" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4499315

Big hit for the Bearcats if he can't play. We will have a younger, inexperienced team that will need some time to figure out how to play together and how to play at the Division 1 level. This softer schedule will give us wins while also letting SVD, AH, BS used to the D1 level while also letting FW and RW
shake off some rust.

I have a feeling we can compete in the Valley by the end of the year as long, but there will be a learning curve.

RE: 2009-2010 Schedule Preview

<a href="http://whiteandbluereview.com/?p=1508" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://whiteandbluereview.com/?p=1508

A Creighton blogger has a pretty good analysis of the non-conference schedules for each MVC team. They can fly under the radar in the non-con schedule with several tough opponents in Iowa State, Iowa, San Diego State, and Austin Peay. This games will help Drake's RPI b.c all four teams should be in the top 100 or 125 the whole year. I think we match up well with everyone. Iowa State and San Diego State may be the toughest, but the added depth of recruits will lead Drake to good games. The two real questions are the big men: I see a rotation of Sean Jones, Seth Van Deest, Adam Templeton, and Reece Ulenhopp underneath. I hope that Adam's time is limited though b/c he is not the prolific shooter we hoped nor a great rebounder. As for the point gaurd position it could be David Smith or Wedel. All can play the position with talent. It's sad to say the rumor right now is that Craig Stanley is out for much of the season with a knee injury. It's not ocnfirmed but unless he can bring down an awful assist-turnover ratio I see these other guys taking over the minutes.

As for the MVC schedule hold on...we open at home...and what close at home too. OMG we get treated better than the last two years start and finish away games. This will significantly help the team. Look Drake is young. Josh Young is the only true, great vetern on the team. The other returners are decent to good players but all of Phelp's recruits have an opporuntiy to be great players in the MVC. Ben Simmons and Aaron Hawley for example are huge. They can play the 2, 3, or 4 positions with their height, speed, and skills. I think we will be young early and this will hurt in the valley schedule . This means experienced teams will Bradley, Illinois State, and UNI, and even Witchita State have a huge advantage. We are not the oldest or best team bu the turning of the old gaurd is occuring in the Valley. We will be over 20 wins and in the top 3 valley teams again with a few years. This season has potential, but probably not NCAA potential. Drake can sneak up on people this year...and we could be dominent if the pg and center positions are solidified early. And I can't lie Josh Young has to show he is capable of carrying the team. He has to find ways to put up 15-20 ppg and get his dagger 3pt fast break shot back. If Young can run the court he is capable of putting up 40 ppg on a good night. He has to have an explosive season to help the younger guys grow into their roles fast. As the season goes on, hopefully, Young's numbers barely decline but only because defenses have to focus on 4 other Drake starters as well.

RE: 2009-2010 Schedule Preview

As for ILL or SIU...
Go for whichever has the better weather forecast. You'll be lucky to make only 1 of the 2 anyway given the time of year.

ILL has a much nicer arena, though I've had some run-ins with fans. Avanti's, a couple of blocks from the arena, is a great (cheap) stop for pre-game meal. The bread there is totally awesome.

I'll try to make the ILL game if weather is decent. The schedule (including that game) will be finalized long before it's determined whether DU and APSU will meet in that tourney. Plus, it wouldn't be fair to APSU to have to give up the return game in their home arena after they had to travel to Des Moines last year.

RE: 2009-2010 Schedule Preview

If we play Austin Peay in the tournament would we still play them again as a return trip for the BracketBuster?
