Exactly. Phelps hasn't exactly been bragging about the systems Drake will run. Maybe he's shying away from an opportunity to reveal the things Drake will do. Stephens should have a say in it too, but maybe she only did it in years past because the Davi wanted to do it.

Just throwing out some guesses. The scrimmage is a great event and I hope they continue it this year.

FYI - Plan to be at the Knapp Center all day on Dec. 20th. The women play Iowa at 2:05 and the men play Iowa at 7:05! I don't know if my heart can take 2 Iowa games in one day, though it is kinda neat.

By the way, a scheduling oddity while piecing thru all the MVC team schedules:

B has a weird setup this year: They play ILL,IND,UNI,SIU,WSU twice before they play E or D even once. Let's hope B isn't hot at the end of the year.

Last year's opening to the MVC schedule played right into D's hands. To get SIU at home early, along with IND which also was poor away from Hulman, really helped the confidence. In addition, if there were two teams I would want to play on the road early...D got 'em: WSU and E. Both contests were close, but D pulled 'em out (note where WSU and E ended up in the standings). That really set the momentum for the conference season and to give the confidence necessary to win at tough places like B and C right after that.

This year's opening includes:
@ E
SMS
@SIU
IND
WSU
@ILL

A little tougher than last year. While going unbeaten like last year to start the conference seems out of the question, a 4-2 or possibly 5-1 mark seems in the realm of possibility. At least the SIU students won't be in session...not sure about the ILL students on J14 still being away (which certainly would help D)...

As for the 'big announcement', I'll be a sucker and say that Butler-D will played at Midnight on ESPN (after all the college football games) or that 'ESPN Gameday' will be at D-C match in Omaha on Jan24.

It looks like the MVC schedule is out. Drake seems to be one of the last to release their full schedule, but we may be able to piece together Drake's schedule from the other MVC teams. What I've found so far:

12/31- vs MSU
1/14- @ ILST
1/21- @ MSU
2/15- vs ILST

Don't be so sure until the final six or so teams are named. I would say our schedule is very similar to what it has been for several years. A handful of solid opponents and a handful and a half of crappy ones.

This schedule certainly appears to be tougher than what Iowa and Iowa State usually play out of conference.

While ISU has not scheduled extremely tough competition, we did play at Bradley, at Oregon State, at Drake, UNI, Iowa, and Minnesota last year. This year we play at Houston, at Hawaii, at Iowa, at UNI, Drake and Oregon State. Where ISU loses some respectability is the amount of directional and hyphenated schools we play. This year, the following teams will come to Ames:
North Dakota
UC-Davis
Loyola Marymount
UW-Milwaukee
and probably about five or six other bad opponents.

Not a powerhouse slate, but road games at Houston, Hawaii, Iowa and UNI will help battle test ISU and several junk games at home should allow us to work our massive amounts of newcomers into the lineup and try and gain some wins and confidence.

Providence will play in the Anaheim Classic from Nov. 27-30 along with Arizona State, Baylor and Wake Forest. The Friars will play at Boston College December 20th.

Hey Law, hope I didn't come across in implying that your whining as that wasn't my intention. But this topic has been beaten to death over the years. I know that several years ago there was a rumor that Kansas offered Drake a game at their place that would have been a nice payday but the Dr declined. I don't know if this is true or not but the guy who told that is a big time booster and I trust what he tells me. Now that the men had a successful season I doubt the KUs of the world have much interest in bringing Drake in to their place and getting their arsches kicked. I'm just saying I think non-conf. schedule looks tough this year and I'm happy with it.

I don't know about this being a weak schedule. Starting off with Butler .. then Vandy .. then New Mexico or VCU ... UTPA is tougher than nails ... I wouldn't call Stephen F Austin a creme puff and NDSU & Jawga Southern will be really tough too .. don't forget Iowa State and Iowa. If the men kick some arsh again, which I think they will, we will see another tough opponent in the BB. Just because none of the BCS schools will play us home and home or on a nuetral court .. screw them .. I like the schedule and believe it to be a step up from anything we've seen in a long time.

Wasn't trying to whine about it, but last year we got dinged a lot for not playing anyone, but you raise a good point in that who would want to play us at home? Maybe we need to go to someone's home court for a couple years, just to get the experience. In any event, it is a step up and should prove challenging enough.

being from chicago area- about a 5 hr drive- i am really hoping the conference schedule will revert back to thursday-saturday was fun to come out for a couple days and see a couple games- but last years's wednesday-saturday was not good

Is it just me or does that schedule look a little on the weak side? At some point we've got to at least start playing the big name programs. Even if we get blown out we need to head in that direction. IMHO.

I think it's a mixed bag.....you've got 5 legit games in Butler, Iowa, Iowa State and the 2 in Cancun. The 2nd Drake tournament isn't bad either....even if people don't know it, NDSU and SFA are pretty decent teams. Definitely plenty of cream puffs on that schedule, too.

Thanks for posting.
Lots of home games .... but 5 majors, and only 2 are in Des Moines.
I agree about preferring some early road tests, but I guess this schedule will be a good test anyway. Lots of new roles to figure out.
I'll take something like 9-3 / 13-5 MVC over 11-1 / 6-12 MVC any day.
