p.s. If you're into such things, Ron's comments on Cubs/Cardinals, and Edmonds and LaRussa, and Lute Olson, and "subtle" hints about the state of the Register are always interesing.

Looking at MVC assistant coaches, and how much most of them have moved around, the more I think it's a positive that Justin Ohl is staying.

For what it's worth, SIU's associate head coach has been there 20 years, starting with Rich Herrin. Never knew that before. They've won more than 400 games in that time. With what, 4 different head coaches?

had nowhere else to go? Pretty hard to believe that, after a Top15 year. I don't think he was looking. Seems like both that he wanted to stay, and Drake wanted him to stay. Seems like a reasonable objective judgment, the way it turned out.

Certainly don't think it was a stupid move. Plenty of people would rather be at Drake than Providence right now. Keno's got a rough time in front of him.

Maybe Justin wants to be at a place like Drake, as opposed to the big-money academic-corner-cutting places. If so, good for him.

He didn't go because his wife wouldn't let him. I like JO ... it's been great fun watching him first as a player and then as a student coach and fianally as an assistant. But this was a stupid move on his part. Perhaps even career suicide. Be an assistant coach at a mid-major school -or- be on the staff at a Big East school. Which is going to look better on the resume. Which would have gotten him hired here at Drake?? Which is going to get him his next job? If being loyal to Drake was all it took to be hired here, why isn't Woodly sitting in the drivers seat right now?

So Ohl is a bad hire because he's been in one place too long, while Richardson is a bad hire because he hasn't been in any one place long enough?

If Woodley had only been looking for an assistants position, he might have gotten it. But he didn't have the experience Drake was looking for. So what is your problem, JO is great guy, the Kids respect him, and that speaks volumes. They didn't respect CD.

Drake will be fine next year.

It's hard to understand how anyone can be so negative so early, do you wake up every day and wonder how the day can get any worse?

WW take a Prozac/Lexapro coctail or just have a beer and relax.

Oh, one other thing, what is with your irrational bias against anyone from ASU? Did Sandy beat you up and steal your milk money? Did an ASU frat member bang your girlfreind when you were in the bathroom? Come clean and tell us the real story? This can't all be about loyalty to CD.

For what it's worth, I don't know about "you all", although it certainly has included me. There is a way that Dr. Maxwell has defined loyalty to the way Drake wants to get it done. The assistant coach hires, and Ryan Wedel, are completely consistent with that. The only objective conclusion, it seems, is that Drake articulated a vision, and Phelps has executed it. In any enterprise, that is practically the definition of working toward success.

It's personally a little selfish, maybe, for me to jump on anyone who might suggest any question about my loyalty to Drake and the basketball program. But don't do it to Josh Young. Don't do it to Bucky Cox, or Brent Heemskerk, or Jacob Bayrenbruch ... geez these guys stuck out all the crappy years, and all this tumult with the coaches now, and they stayed, they stayed. Even if you can't do it for the coaching staff, do it for these guys. Talk about loyalty, loyalty ... Emmenecker, Houston, Korver, and these guys for next year are what loyalty is about. They've earned plenty of loyalty from anybody who's a true Drake fan.

Talk what you want, it's a free discussion, and I hope you get it all out of your system, WW, but the "blind" thing is a bit too far. And I won't take lightly any suggestion that any of my loyalty is "blind". Loyalty to Drake is a given ... the opportunity to objectively question the tactics along the way is also a given. It seems me to that the evidence is that they've come together in this case.

Have at it! It's all fun. It's just basketball, after all. But don't ever question the loyalty. It's way, way beyond any current coaches or admin. or anything.

Well said, especially in the context of Iowa and Iowa State lately. Iowa State can't keep ANYBODY for very long, doesn't seem to matter who the coach is. The Drake guys staying is a credit to all of David, Sandy, Phelps, and Justin Ohl.

Look at where Drake is right now, relative to Iowa and Iowa State and UNI. Keeping the players around for 4 years and progressing toward degrees is what it's about. The evidence is that Drake's doing that ... credit the Davis's, or Emmenecker, or Korver, or Houston, or some magical confluence ... whatever it is, the Drake admin. obviously made it clear that the new coach and his staff were to do everything they could to keep it going. We're in a great position relative to those other schools right now.

Again, don't talk to us about loyalty, WW. We've been through the fire on that on, for 37 years. Drake has never been in better shape, toward what it wants to get accomplished and how it wants to accomplish it.

With all the turmoil at UI and ISU losing players, I would think the fact that Mark has impressed our kids enough to stick it out in an era when moving even with a penalty is becoming more common.

W wants to ignore the fact that several kids didn't want Chris as a coach and we might have lost a couple key people.

So far we haven't lost any players and the one recruit may be better suited to a smaller program. Not to mention picking up Wedell.

I think he's off to a good start after walking into a tumultuous situation. Popular coach leaves after first NCAA appearance in 37 years? It could have been a disaster with the wrong approach.

I'd say wait a year to see how this staff recruits and handles game situations. There is no way that anyone can know how this is going to go. All we have are opinions and yours is obviously negative. As far as the assistants go DUBulldog hit the nail on the head. We aren't going to get experienced high level BCS assistants. We never have and never will. I'd like the staff to succeed, hope you do too.

For the record, on Kareem ...

"Richardson earned dual bachelors degrees from UE in mass communications and interpersonal communication and later received an MBA from the University of Indianapolis where he was a graduate assistant basketball coach."

Seems like several legs up on, academic- and intelligence-wise, on the crazy NCAA Money Hungry World. Seems consistent with the Drake Way.

On Mike Gibson ....

"Gibson graduated from Carnegie Mellon University (Herb Sendek's alma mater) in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 2005 with a B.S. in business administration with an emphasis on sports management.

At CMU, Gibson earned a spot on the Dean's High Honor List every semester while playing four years for the men's basketball team, the last of which he served as team captain.

He earned a 3.97 GPA at CMU and had a 4.0 in the master's degree classes that he completed at Michigan State in 2006. At CMU, he was part of five national academic honor societies (National Dean's List, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society, Mortar Board Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars)."

As to Justin Ohl ... as stated, it's just obvious keeping him on.

Coach Phelps' hiring at Drake means Herb Sendek now has seven former assistants who are D-I head coaches. The others are Jim Christian, formerly at Kent State and now at TCU (Miami assistant from 1994-96), Charlie Coles at Miami of Ohio (Miami assistant from 1994-96), Larry Hunter at Western Carolina (NC State assistant from 2001-05), Ron Hunter of IUPUI (Miami assistant from 1993-94), Ohio State's Thad Matta (Miami assistant in 1994-95) and Xavier's Sean Miller (assistant at both Miami from 1994-96 and at NC State from 1996-2000). This Herb guy certainly has a background in having assistants who've been successful. And, I think Phelps got the charge from Drake admin. to get a good mix of athletic and academic ... the evidence certainly is that he did that.

One person with no experience, another with limited experience [sorry JO - I really like you, but you are still a youngster and no hei apparent, sorry!] and a third with shakey experience. You all talk about loyalty and staying with a program - 6 jobs in 12 years! There's loyalty for you. How many years do you really think he plans to give to Drake??

I can understand not liking the Phelps hire. I can understand not liking Gibson because he's inexperienced. I can understand not liking Richardson because he's moved too often. I cannot understand not liking Ohl, though. He provides continuity with the previous coaching staff. He bleeds blue, having come to Drake as a player in 1997 and has never left. Hiring Ohl is a no-brainer.

WW, if you've read stuff here, you know I was plenty skeptical about Phelps, until we saw some moves. The moves are here now ... what is it that you would say would be more positive? Can you name names? What's negative about keeping Justin Ohl? What's negative about bringing Mike Gibson, a guy with high caliber academic and basketball background? Let's see some real back-up evidence if you want to try to drag down Kareem.

I believe that Sandy and David gave Phelps the charge to put together an assistant staff that would provide lots of opportunity for growth, and the next generation of coaching in Drake basketball. I think he did that. I think they all had a hand in it. I believe they all wanted Justin Ohl to stay, for a whole lot of good reasons.

You're gonna tick me off talking about "for the blind". We've all been through a whole string of god-awful coaching experiences, decisions made by past people for not very good reasons. If there's anyone in the WORLD who would be skeptical about a coaching hire, it's a Drake men's basketball fan. Don't give me this "blind" stuff. Objectively, I don't recall any coaching staff more suited to what Drake wants to get accomplished for the long-term. In fact, it's amazing that we're even talking about it so much, that it matters so much. Who cared when Abatemarco named assistants? Rudy's assistants? Where are they now?

As to what's best for Sandy ... right now, it's what is best for Drake basketball, in its brightest time in 37 years. Even if you're cynical, and think she only wants what's best for her own career ... what would be FANTASTIC for her own career right now is that Drake basketball be successful again next year.

As to loyalty ... Justin Ohl showed it. We appreciate that. It's a good thing.

Anyway, thanks at least for spicing it up, WW. Probably not through with you.

Some might say the same about you. You joined the board to push a specific candidate for the head coaching job. He didn't get it, and you seem a little bit bitter about it.

SHC didn't do what was best for Drake - she did what was best for SHC.

How so? If SHC wants to move up in the world of athletic administration, then getting this hire right is of paramount importance to her. If Phelps fails, it will hurt SHC in the long run If he succeeds, it can only help her. How is this hire best for SHC, unless it also works out well for Drake?

If he's successful as a recruiter, Drake will be in good shape when he leaves, whether that be in 2 years or 10 years. It is not unusual for young assistants to move around a lot. In a couple of cases, he switched jobs due to the head coach being fired. It would be great to have assistant coaches that other schools want to hire.

How can you all sit there and be satisfied with this???

I'm not sure what Drake fans could realistically expect. It's not like DU is going to be able to hire successful assistant coaches away from BCS programs. I'm more than willing to give these guys a chance to prove themselves.

I think we should all wait more than 1 month to declare the coaching staff a failure.

Had a feeling you (or somebody) would say this. JO is known quantity to Drake. Gibson is known quantity to Phelps. That leaves Kareem.

Just a little different take on it, is all. Beat up on WW some more, not me. It's all positive as far as I'm concerned. Not counting last fall, when we knew this was a really good bunch of guys, I'm more positive than I've been since at least 1985. It looks to me like Sandy and Dr. Maxwell deserve a lot of credit right now. Of course, for me it's mostly based on Justin Ohl staying ... otherwise, hmmm I don't know ... good thing, it doesn't matter, since he is staying.

At the risk of going a little bit overboard ... Justin Ohl may be heir-apparent, for when Phelps leaves, and maybe he stays at Drake for a long time. We can have dreams. I like the thought. I'd bet the thought has passed through Sandy and David's brains.

Doesn't mention NCAA issues, and not the kind of sound bite you'd expect if you were firing a coach due to cheating. A quick internet search did not lead me to any NCAA issues with the Wright State program. The coach who replaced him in 2003 was fired by Wright State in 2006 for NCAA violations he had commited while at Ohio State.

Karem has had 6 jobs in 12 years ... and when he was at Wright State they cheated so badly that the staff was fired.

If that isn't bad enough, with 12 years recruiting experience he is the MOST experienced person on the staff ... surpassing Phelps who has only been recruiting 7 years and only got the job at NCSt because he brought in players - I have never liked a coach that buys his way onto a staff, but that is another story altogether...

The other new hire has ZERO recruiting experience
