Afterall, do you really think Drake's success could have happened without Keno pulling the strings? Rise up and be big men. Not small petty men."

I wish Keno well. But the way it came about left plenty of room for anger, resentment, bitterness. You know the players felt it, even though they were polite in public (good for them).

Different deal with fans who've been around for 37 years, or longer, through all that Drake basketball coaching stuff. Think we've earned a right to be a little vocal on the subject.

And I do think Adam and the guys were really ready to play this year and would have been good with any decent coach who let them play. Keno certainly was smart enough to let them play. Hope Phelps is smart like that next year, too.

RE: Right time for Drake

G-man. Perfect storm lucky."

Thought about that plenty for some months, and I believe that. Leonard came out really ready to play from Day One. Bucky was a monster, right from the get-go in Bahamas, or wherever it was. Emmenecker was way better than any of us ever knew, including all the coaches. Josh is Josh, Sweet Swisher. Put some talent like that around a guy like Klayton, and it kinda works good.

As to Drake-Creighton ... could watch that game all the time, any time. P'Allen's "lay up" is legendary in this whole thing. Won't ever forget it. That was about as fun as anything ever gets.

RE: Right time for Drake

Hijacking the thread here, but given the title... it's the "right time for Drake" right now, Mediacom is replaying the Drake vs. Creighton white-out home game--Leonard dunking, KK hitting the trey from the "D", JY nailing 3s... It is absolutely the perfect time to bring in a new coach. I don't agree with you about the recruiting points you make, but think about the strength of what we have coming back, fan interest, recognition for the school, etc. Let's say Kano stayed a couple more years and had some nice 20-win seasons with an NCAA and an NIT. People would say it was good, but not like 2007-08. JY would be gone, Bucky gone, Urban Legend gone. It would loook like a rebuilding situation and the fan base would be hungry for a return to 07-08. For the sake of the program and the ability to hire the best replacement, this was the perfect time for Kano to jump ship.

RE: Right time for Drake

I have thought of it that way. If last season had never happened, who had a better resume? Clearly Phelps. The only advantage Beno would have would be ties to Iowa, but that was before we knew he considers himself a New Englander.

Right time for Drake

I've been thinking the last few days that this change in coaching might be one of the best things that ever happened to Drake Basketball. Think of it this way.

We had a great season with two unrecruited walk ons. Keno and Chris Davis can't take credit for that. Only Bucky and Adam deserve that credit. keno and Chris weren't good enough prognositcators to see the talent in high school and give them a scholly. However, they have handed out schollies to players who turned out to be huge busts. I won't name them but we know who they are. So in my view, Keno got lucky. Perfect storm lucky.

Enter Mark Phelps. Proven recruiter. Assistant from successful BCS programs. Comes into a higher profile Drake job. He recruits, talent improves, Drake continues to go dancing.

Meanwhile, Providence lurks at the bottom of the Big East with two star recruits, losing records, luck runs out.
