hmmm, plenty of fodder for that here, Drake basketball version. Nice job by everybody here stating the reasons about all the Crap in the Afternoon. I assume Andy G. has gotten the message!

Quite a contrast with what Cotlar does in the morning. Just another example was the interview with Phelps this week, interesting and informative. There isn't any reason you can't do that in the afternoon, too.

It is common knowledge that MT hates Drake. It is also common knowledge that he makes up at least half of everything he says. The combination leads him to fabricate negative stories about Drake which he reports as factual, and which most of his uneducated audience accepts as the truth. The examples posted by others on this thread are a very small selection of negative things he has said about Drake.

Before this season he could not name 5 teams in the Valley. He could not have named 3 players on Drake's roster. he knows nothing about Drake other than what he gets from Jerry Crawford or what he got in the past from kurt Kanaskie. His views are understandably warped.

I had to log in on this one. I am glad to see that I am not the only person who is completely disgusted with KCCi and their commentary and coverage of the Bulldogs. WHO was consistently the frontrunner all winter long when it came to covering Drake. It just got to the point where I tuned in to 13 first when it came to seeing what was happening. KCCI is too negative.

I am now a loyal WHO viewer.

Three things Marty has said that caused me to stop listening:

1. I posted this on another thread, but I am repeating it anyway. Marty was running Phelps down for the graduation rate at NC State one year being 0 percent. Marty was wondering how Sandi, and the high standards Drake, could possibly hire him. A caller stated that one year when Keno was at Southern Indiana the graduation rate was 14 percent. Marty quickly shut the caller down, stated he was simply trying to throw Keno under the bus, and his comment was irrelevant. Need I say more?

2. A few weeks ago a Paul Revere's pizza delivery guy was assaulted at the 24oo block of Boston Avenue. Terrell was talking about it on aid, and stated that Paul Revere's was located in the Drake neighborhood and that the Drake neighborhood wasn't safe. The assault didn't happen in the Drake neighborhood, yet he made it a point to once again make disparaging remarks about Drake. Need I elaborate?

3. When it was announced that Keno was leaving Terrell kept saying Drake needed to pony up the money and pay him the same as Providence. He was agreeing with idiot callers when they were saying Drake has money dripping off the walls. I sent Terrell an e-mail with directions on how to find Drake financial information on Drake's Web site (it is all there under business and finance), specifically a PowerPoint that outlines nicely Drake's financial standing for the past several years. That information will show that paying a head coach $1 million was not possible. Even after I sent that information he continues to say Drake has the money and should have paid Keno. As someone else stated, he makes statements without doing his homework.

Andy, I hope this provides some concrete examples.

I watch KCCI and listen to M&M (although I find myself frequently flipping to 1700 despite the fact that they don't have a local sportstalk guy).
My complaint with Terrell is not based on opinions I disagree with, but instead his lack of preparation and emotionalism. First off, I get their show. Two guys, talking sports, one takes one side, the other offers the opposite opinion. It causes people to react and gets callers. It's not that different than talking sports with your friends over beers. And just like the discussions with my friends -- there's always one who is first to shoot off his mouth without any facts to back it up, and then he gets pissed off when you start disagreeing with him. This is Marty Terrell. After a while you get sick of listening to your friend and you stop talking sports with him. This is where I am with Marty. I really wish they would bring Deace back to sports. BTW, I don't LOVE to HATE the guy. He's worn me out and I'm tuning him out.

A couple of things come to mind with regards to MT in response to Mr. Garmen's request:

1. Both on your KCCI news and on his radio show, MT went on a baseless tirade about Drake changing its academic standards for the Davis'. That was just 100% incorrect. I tried to call Marty and tell him so, but he hung up. My point was that under Kurt K, he had a year that he lost 4 kids to academics at semester break. All 4 were JUCO's. If you look at Drake's team last year, NOT 1 of the starting 5 was a JUCO. So KCCI allowed MT to go on their news and report something that was baseless, a plain lie. Any first year journalism student would know to check the facts first.

2. On MT's show a couple of weeks ago he went on another tirade (with Andy Garmen on his show) about Drake (Sandy and Maxwell) completely dropping the ball. Forcing the Davis' out so she could hire her own person. My guess is that Keno wasn't going to sign an extension until he knew he wasn't leaving, which makes very good business sense. Sandy and Dr. Tom's relationship is fine, she was not forcing him out. And Coach Phelps and Sandy's existence together at ASU lasted all of 2 weeks. She didn't owe anyone anything. MT is just mad because she won't talk to him on his show and I don't blame her. She'll talk all day to Cotlar because he is actually a respected journalist who is in the business for more than just stroking his ego.

3. With regards MTs rank of a completely different subject, Little League baseball and playing on Sunday mornings, again he made statements that were just false. But that is a post for a different site.

I understand Marty has a job to do, but HE chooses to do it without integrity. He doesn't check on the facts, he makes personal attacks, and he doesn't let anyone publically challenge him. Contrary to his belief, he doesn't sit on top of the hill. When or if 1700 gets local programming in the afternoon, maybe we will get to listen to a real sports journalist at that time slot.

KCCI doesn't need to bring itself down to Marty's level unless it is trying to get its ratings down far enough to be over taken by the field. Your station is above MT's kind of baseless BS.

How Cotlar keeps from kick'n the guy's nuts up in his throat is beyond me.

Miller can be a DA too.

Marty T is a bully. He bully's his callers. He bully's anyone who disagrees with him. And he uses the mic to do it. He continually badgered and ridiculed Drake with lies and supposed inside information. I've heard him do the same to advertisers who wouldn't advertise with him. The last time he left town, he was run out.

He made a big deal about going to St. Louis this year. I was there. MT RAN away from Drake fans. A few of us had some off mic comments to make to him. But he can't be a bully off mic. Like most bullies they run from a fair fight.

Andy, the man lies, and has been a Drake hater all season. If he would do an honest job commenting on the possitives along with the actual negatives he wouldn't have so many people angry with him. As it stands now, he has been rebuked by his station and his sponsors, for his comments on such things as bashing Sandy at every opportunity and claiming he's giving Josh's phone number out. Sorry but the man is an A$$ H@!e. The town, the state, the teams, and frankly humanity would be better off if Marty just quietly vanished into the abyss.

Just as an FYI, I have been able to verify that this really is Andy Garman. No way I'm going to let somebody post using the name of a public figure without being able to verify their identity.

As for Marty....I still listen to him (sorry to the Drake fans who consider this sacrilege). But, I don't necessarily like him. That's how bad radio in Des Moines is, when I find myself listening to somebody I don't really like. But, I've got to admit, he is entertaining at times. I enjoy sports news, and KXNO is the place to get it....you just have to be able to sift through the opinions on various things to get the facts.

Anyway, Marty has been extremely critical of both Sandy Hatfield Clubb and David Maxwell regarding the hiring of Coach Phelps. I believe this criticism is based on some "inside information" that has been given to him, that might or might not be true. It's one thing to be critical, but I think he went overboard in his criticism of Maxwell and Clubb without being able to verify that the information he had was correct. That, more than anything, is what has annoyed the Drake fans that I've talked to.

I know Marty stated several times during the season that the Davises were given more leeway with regards to getting kids into school than their predecessor was. He repeatedly made comments such as "look at how many juco kids Dr Tom and Keno brought in. (His predecessor) never would have been allowed to do that." Maybe not an exact quote, but something very, very similar. The fact is, Kurt Kanaskie brought in many more junior college recruits than the Davises did. This is not a shot at Kanaskie, but Marty was trying to diminish the Davis's accomplishments by making blatantly misleading statements like that.

All season long, as far back as the Iowa game, Marty talked about how Drake was getting to get exposed. Virtually every game, he would predict Drake to lose. He talked about how UNI's front-line would just destroy them. He even predicted Drake to lose their first round game in St Louis. Not the best way to endear yourself to the Drake fans.

I know his job is to create controversy. Controversy sells. He probably doesn't even believe half the stuff he's saying. I've got no problem with opinions, even if they're totally off the wall. It's when he starts distorting the facts, or stating his opinions as if they were facts, that I get annoyed.

Dialogue is good. If you're really Andy Garman (no reason to doubt it) ... you've earned a lot of respect from me for just asking the question.

Marty's is a lot of shtick and very little substance to begin with, but that's obvious and too easy. Shtick sells in the media game, after all.

Specific to Drake ....... If you can believe anything he says, he was a good buddy of Kanaskie and has never gotten over it. Geez, the guy was a total loser at Drake, besides not "getting" how serious Drake is about the 2.0 thing. Of course he's gonna get dumped sooner or later.

Also, Marty's just too dumb about talking about Dr. Maxwell talking to him, ever going on a show live with him. Dr. Maxwell has a University to run. I don't think he's gonna spend much time worrying about whether some weird afternoon guy thinks he doesn't pay enough attention to athletics. Marty's normally just plain wrong about anything he says about Dr. Maxwell.

Marty also asked a really offensive question when Sandy was on after Keno left .... probably discussed in the thread linked here; something about the shock of Keno leaving feeling like WKU's last second shot. That was way over the line, even for a crappy radio guy. Way way too close to home for any Drake fan at that point in time.

That's just recent stuff. Bottom line, Marty does not "get" the Drake approach. A top 15 team this year, with a bunch of great students, was just spectacular, and a great credit to Drake as an institution. That was what made this Drake season so exceedingly fun to watch unfold. You won't see that combination very often, ever, in the money-hungry NCAA world. Marty didn't "get" it.

Guess I'm getting repetitive now. Thanks for listening. You're a good man to ask. Dump The Mouth, though, or I'm not ever watching 8 sports again.

This thread is probably a good place to start. His "I'm going to give Josh Young's phone number to Okie St" schtick assured him a special place at the bottom of my heart. BTW, I'm not someone who loves to hate the guy, I love to ignore him. I don't think I've listened to him since this show, and I don't plan to again anytime soon.

I'm a John Walters fan, so if the CBS affiliate is a joke, I suggest WOI (assuming he does the sportscast). He is from near Hinsdale and is a D guy...even did D radio if memory serves. Once of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

WOI-TV is in West Des Moines....I don't know about their Drake coverage because I have never watched their newscast.

Why watch Channel 8 news at all? It's the same junk, and WHO has consistently given more time to Drake on Sports. Channel 8 had nothing on Drake basketball this year until it got to the point where NOBODY had any interest in the Cyclones. All Drake supporteres should watch Channel 13. If not, Channel 5, which in spite of being in Ames gives Drake better coverage than 8.

It was funny how Andy G. said he first heard of Mark Phelps on DrakeNation.com.

After Marty did his schtick about Sandy and Maxwell not coming on his show, they acted like they had a huge scoop on C. Davis and R. Davis going to Providence. whooo, that's a scoop.

I'm in the watch 8 news and weather then switch elsewhere for sports mode.

I can't believe a station that prides itself on journalistic integrity, allows the mouth to go on. He had Andy Garman on the radio with him today.

For a station with such storied tradition, I'm disappointed they have sunk so low as to think they need to put MT on once a week.

I still watch the news portion of KCCI, but as soon as the weather is over, I switch to WHO to watch the sports.

I'm guessing they'll never put a sock in it, but then again it doesn't matter because I've switched my sports viewing. Too bad because Andy and John are very nice guys.
