Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports says Drake will play at the Arizona site in the preseason NIT:

Sad but perhaps true. It depends if the money was already paid through next year or not. By next year the company won't have any cash pay anyone. The court will have divvied it up by then.

We've had a North Dakota and now a North Dakota St fan come on here to say their teams will be coming to Drake for a tournament next year. Drake hosted two tournaments last year, so UND and NDSU could play in separate tournaments next year. I haven't heard about any other opponents for the tourneys.[/quote]

Some more info from the Fargo Forum....

NDSU will also play...in a Dec. 12-13 tournament at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The University of North Dakota is scheduled to play in that tournament in 2009.

I was at the first college basketball games at Wells Fargo (a double-header with UNI and Drake, with Drake beating Detroit) and remember the quotes by Drake players thoroughly enjoying the venue.

Your right, it is a decent venue, but remember, concessions at the knapp go to
Drake, 100% of the ticket take goes to Drake, Any merchandise goes to Drake.

If we move to WF, we get no concession$, only a cut of Merchandise, and we have no idea about the gate split with WF.
We possibly could have to sell out WF to make slightly more than the Knapp. It would have to be a very favorable deal I think for it to be worth Drake moving off campus even for a few games.

I think UMKC already has home-and-homes with WSU and UNI over the next few years, so I don't know how willing they'd be to add another MVC team. Drake vs Kansas St in the Sprint Center would be awesome.

Based on the returning players and where I think Coach Phelps wants to take the program, I'd hope it will be a jump up. Don't forget, none of them want to play the Bulldogs except at their place. Though I have heard rumors of a big time booster lending a helping hand in creating some home & home series with some BCS programs, the former coaching regimes have turned those offers down.

Blue is a very cool dog. We have two bulldogs that .. IMO .. are just as cool and probably cooler than Blue. We use to buy stuffed Creighton Blue Jays and let the two creatures from outerspace rip 'em to shreds but then I became friends with LJ and his lover TBJ and felt it was a bit over the top and unsportsmanlike. Not worth the drama when you piss off a couple festive guys, right?

The buzz around Hinsdale today is the Butler-D rematch is scheduled for Nov 15...the season opener for Butler, and probably the same for D. That is a saturday during the high peak of college football season, so I would be surprised if it is televised nationally.

On an aside, it looks like Butler's very cool mascot, Blue, is already warming up for the rematch. Despite his somewhat misguided choice in Bulldog squads, he rocks.

The fans at UND seem pretty sure they're coming to the Drake Invitational. The only other tidbit I've picked up (maybe on this board) is that the SLU coach is making dropping hints that he'd like to move the school from the A10 to the MVC. Short of that, home and home with them would be good. If the Butler game happens, it would be really cool if it could be part of a pre-season tournament.

We need more rumors. Why aren't our local sportswriters sitting outside of Sandy's office every morning and checking her wastebasket every night?

Indeed. The fun part (one of them anyway), after this year, is that Drake fans are gonna travel. Drake setting up getting 200 students on buses to Iowa City early this year was just brilliant. Made a big difference in making the magic that was this year. Something similar with Northwestern or Minnesota or Nebraska or Missouri or St. Louis or DePaul could really be fun. And a couple thousand, no more thousands, Drake fans at Hilton would be spectacular. I can't wait.

What Drake needs is an away game that will draw fans and is a decent game.

How about Northwestern in Chicago Thanksgiving weekend? You would have students and alumni available as a draw...

And how about a Friday night Bulldog Bash / Peggy's Party at the Drake Hotel downtown....

The Alumni Association should eat up a Drake at the Drake party... Very classy and sounds like fun.... Students, Alumni, the pep band, cheerleaders and the team....

I might even fly in from San Francisco for that!

I was there for Drake-Detroit, too. Nice place, but it didn't feel like home. Of course, the Knapp Center didn't much at that point, either.

Especially after the spectacular buzz at the Knapp this year, I'm not gonna advocate playing at Wells. All the money talk just makes me ill. It doesn't have to all be about money.

It sure would be interesting right now to have a tap into what's in Dr. Maxwell's brain about basketball.

Davidson used their beefed up non-conference schedule to their advantage this season. They played extremely well against some high profile programs and that helped their resume and coincidentially strengthened their team to make the impressive NCAA tourney run.

I believe Drake could possibly convince Tennessee to do a home and home. Coach Pearl has great respect for the Davis family, having worked with Dr. Tom for many years and having Keno on his coaching staff at Southern Indiana. Coach Pearl has a very recognizable name in Iowa and the squad includes ex-Hawkeye Tyler Smith. Although Drake wants to use the Knapp Center for all its home games, it might be feasible to use Wells Fargo for the Des Moines site. There's great interest in Drake basketball right now and Drake could possibly fill the arena for a nice pay gate and possible national television interest. This would be different than the concept of using Wells Fargo for the Iowa or Iowa State game and not having a Drake home court advantage.

I think adding some of the A-10 teams to our schedule such as Dayton, Xavier, St. Joe's, U Mass or Temple would be great games. I think more exposure here in Ohio and in the east would be beneficial for Drakes exposure for future scheduling and for recruiting.

Melvin, I agree that those would be some good teams/places to play, but I don't think many of those teams would be interested in a home and home with Drake. And, the reasons are the same reasons you mentioned for why it would be beneficial for Drake. These teams aren't interested in exposure in Des Moines, Iowa, and there certainly are no recruiting benefits for these teams, as Des Moines is, for the most part, a recruiting wasteland.

This is the first I've heard about St Mary's doing a return game at Drake. If that is true, that is good news. Also the first I've heard about the pre-season NIT....the only drawback with the pre-season NIT is that you have to block off enough time on your schedule to accomodate the entire tournament, but you might be out after the first day. I think Gardner-Webb ran into problems this season, as they never expected to beat Kentucky, and had another game scheduled for the same day as their next NIT game. Has the NIT changed it so that teams that lose in the early rounds play each other to guarantee at least 2 games?
