Wow, what a great ride!!! Hate to throw a damper on things, but did anyone else see the little blurb in the paper this week? Yep, Indiana fired their soccer coach (see what happens when Drake beats you?). Do you think this is bad news for DU? I'll bet Coach Holmes is on IU's short list.

With Caleb Porter signed to a new five-year deal with Akron, folks in Indiana might be wondering who will be the next to coach the storied Indiana University soccer program. Sources tell me that University of Wisconsin head coach Todd Yeagley will be named Indiana's head coachat some point in the coming weeks. Yeagley is the son of legendary Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley.

If that is the case, and it doesn't seem improbable given his past at Evansville, then no amount of money Sandy can drum up is keeping Holmes at Drake. When a program like IU comes calling you go, no questions asked. For reference, this would be like if Drake's men's bball team goes to the Elite 8 in three years time and beats UCLA along the way and the Bruins fire their coach and come calling for Phelps. He'd be gone no matter what. IU are Men's Soccer royalty, along with SLU and UVA.

Sandy better have some serious talks (starting tomorrow!) to ensure Sean stays here...starting with giving him a multi-year contract and not the continuous one-year deals he's had throughout his time. Holmes is a great guy and he really deserves a big raise because there's no doubt his name is on the radar for open jobs everywhere.

Congrats to the soccer team, what an amazing journey! This team's success was achieved with class and integrity, they should be holding their heads high with pride. Way to go Bulldogs!

Back to the hotel w/the squad. They're disappointed, but resilient. I think they're handling it pretty well.

Given that most saw this, I'll just throw out a few random thoughts and musings.

- A good representation of D fans. Basically about 75-100 fans showed up and were cheering loud/proud.
-Fetzer Field has some serious tradition. The NC ladies have won some ridiculous number of championships...like 18 or something. Pretty cool to be part of the scene.
-Scenic campus and cramped like you wouldn't believe. Getting around in a vehicle is brutal. Then again, the founders of the school many generations ago could not have foreseen automobiles, etc.
-Great pregame party at Ham's.
-Big props to the TarHeels. They were a very solid squad. Would've taken some supreme (and lucky) play to pull this one out. In the postgame conference, the squad understood that and accepted it.
-Coach Holmes is awesome. What a great guy! Laid back, remembers everyone, willing to chat it up before (and after) the match. If there are any recruits reading this, you would enjoy playing for him. He is class.
-And what to say about the players. What a solid group. Good players, good people. To take D to these heights is really outstanding. Winning huge matches at Columbus and Chestnut Hill was amazing. I feel for the seniors...you could tell they were close. The squad stayed on the field for several minutes after the match...clearly not wanting it to end...not only because the season is over, but their opportunity to play together is at end. They'll bounce back and realize they are now a great part of D history. Kudos to them and all the rest. It was fun to follow and watch them.

I think the squad leaves here around 8AM with a layover at Ohare. A heroes welcome back at D would be most suitable. I hope a few people can give them the ovation they most richly deserve.

The traditional power recently in our conference has been Creighton. I'd like to see Drake get to that point. They were playing in Chapel Hill and we need to remember that UNC was the national runner up last year. They are a top power almost every year so this was always likely to happen. The boys have a lot to be proud of.

10 minutes in, 0-0. Tar Heels fouling a whole bunch... Dogs clearly not intimidated at all and in fact, a few players have gotten the best of a couple of UNC guys.

Still 0-0. These Tar Heels are a bunch of whiners. Dogs not getting a lot of shots, playing lots of tough defense. Drozd isn't in goal, his injury must have been serious to not return after getting hurt at BC.

6AM flight (in a few hours) to RDU. Ouch. Here's hoping for a more successful trip to Raleigh than last time I was rooting on the alma mater (ladies bball lost to South Carolina in Raleigh in Sweet16).

Will have all of you in spirit with me on Tobacco Road...but I won't have my laptop, so a full report may have to wait until my arrival back to the frozen Midwest. Pregame party is at a place called Ham's in Chapel Hill (no McB, not Hamm's...your favourite brew )

For those interested, the soccer Final Four this year is in Cary, which is right next to Raleigh/Durham/ChapelHill....so it would be back to the same spot next weekend if the situation Friday night warrants yet another roadtrip...

D is 0-1 all-time against teams from North Carolina (contrary to the website - Duke is in North Carolina and Coastal Carolina is in SOUTH Carolina). Let's hope in 24 hours that record is 1-1.

SERIES HISTORY
Drake will be squaring off against North Carolina for the first time in school history. The encounter will mark only the third overall meeting between the Bulldogs and a school from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), with Drake earning a 6-4 victory against Boston College last Sunday (Nov. 29) after dropping a 3-0 decision to Duke on Sept. 3, 1995 in Omaha, Neb.

TIDBITS ON DRAKE AND NORTH CAROLINA

• Drake is 1-0-0 all-time versus schools from North Carolina or the Tar Heel State. The Bulldogs earned a 2-0 decision versus Coastal Carolina on Oct. 15, 1993, in Omaha, Neb.
