Defeated Missouri State today 7-2 to win the MVC Conference Tournament and will now be playing in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in the program's history I believe. Also picked to finish 9th like the basketball team.

Drake's Dismal Performance NCAA Academic Progress Report

Drake's dismal results in the recently released annual Div 1 NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) for enrollment throughout the 2003-04-2006-07 academic years need to be addressed.The APR measures semester by semester records for every individual team in Div 1 with regard to each team members' continuing eligibility,retention and progress. Every NCAA sport gave rankings for the teams that compete in these sports.
The NCAA commends teams that have an APR score in the top 10% within their sport
Bradley's athletic website listed four of their sports which were commended -Creighton had five.
For comparison Davidson had 14 sports commended -Harvard had 18
The Ivy League was the only conference to have commendations for all of its football teams
Where is Drake ? I'm sure that there will be many making excuses for Drake's poor performance but a soilid effort in instititional self- examination would be far more fruitful.

...a confluence of several forces through the late 1970s and early 80's helped make the Penn Relays, which first ran in 1895, what it has become today.
From the deregulation of the airlines, allowing air fares to become more affordable for schools to travel to Penn from farther distances, to the breakdown of the former Midwest Triple Crown of track & field, to Eastern coaches migrating and spreading the word of the Penn Relays westward.
All had a significant impact on making the Penn Relays something special.
"With the airlines, a lot of the schools ... started coming in that hadn't been here. Then they started recruiting Jamaicans and other Caribbeans, and when (those athletes) went to those schools, they wanted to come back (to the Penn Relays)," Johnson said.
There was also a point during that time period when the Kansas Relays, the second jewel of the Midwest Triple Crown and held between meets at Texas and at Drake, "had some difficulties," according to Johnson. With Drake and Penn competing on the same weekend, over time, the prestige of the triple crown faded and more and more intercollegiate squads began heading east to Penn.
"When Kansas started having problems ... that allowed for some teams to come to Penn that normally would have gone to Drake," Johnson said. "Beyond that, you had some coaches moving out of the normal Penn drawing area. And Eastern coaches started migrating West. Those major factors all happening at pretty much the same time really catapulted us forward."

The 2008 Drake Relays will be held April 24 - April 26, 2008.

The Drake Broadcasting System, the student media organization on Drake's campus, will be televising their 20th annual Relays coverage the entire weekend. The broadcast is available locally in Des Moines, and globally through DBStv's webstream at www.godrakebulldogs.com

In Des Moines, you can catch the DBStv's coverage of the 2008 Relays on Mediacom College Channel 16.

The webstream does have a small fee attached, but all proceeds go directly back to improving the Drake Relays.

Channel 9 will soon have a new weekend sports anchor: Andy Fales from WHO TV 13 in Des Moines.

It was reported in January that Channel 9 was looking to replace Bill Pikus.

Fales, 36, is from St. Louis and is a graduate of Drake. Fales’ last day at the Des Moines station is May 27.

“It might not be long before Andy is the main guy there,” one of Fales’ co-workers told the Des Moines Register.

Hmmm. That might be news to Len Dawson.

Eliminate 2.0 rule

Here's a suggestion. Let's start an e-mail campaign to all the Deans and Maxwell restating our/my objection to the 2.0 rule. Talking points could be:
1. It's discriminatory in that it only affects the men's and women's basketball programs
2. It's elitist in that it doesn't give students from more disadvantaged school systems a chance to acclimate to the academic requirements of the University.
3. It's a punishment for something that happened over ten years ago and no longer serves a useful purpose.
4. It puts Drake at a disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint
5. Many times it works in opposition to Drake's diversity goals.
6. It's the right thing to do for the athletes.

What do ya think?

I don't blame ISU for not wanting to play in Wells Fargo. They're right when they say they lose homecourt advantage. Plus it costs more money to play in Wells Fargo, and they apparently draw better in Hilton anyway. I don't want Drake to play in Wells Fargo for many of the same reasons. I'd think ISU could find a way to play some neutral-home site series with a few name opponents if they wanted to, but that's their loss.

As a taxpayer, though, I wonder what the purpose of Wells Fargo Arena is if they can't attract noteworthy sporting events. So far it seems like the only things WFA has brought to Des Moines are a minor league hockey team with an attendance of a few thousand, and badly overpriced concerts performed by artists who peaked at least a decade ago.

Yes it's true, Drake Sports are now being broadcast over the REAL radio! The radius for the station is about TWICE what we had originally thought. We've gotten it about 8 miles north, the same to the east, and all the way to Jordan Creek! That means that if you're in the general area of DSM or Drake's campus, you can tune into virtually EVERY Drake home game! Go to www.drakebroadcasting.com and click on the sports link on the left side to see the schedule of games we will be calling and at what times they're at. Also, leave your thoughts in the message board on drakebroadcasting.com in the KDCS Sports area (yeah, the titles there still have to be updated). I've got a team of about 5 or 6 guys working for me that are doing everything they can to make the first year of 94-1 The Dog your best source for Drake Sports while school is in session. Also, tune into 94-1 every Wed. night from 7-8pm for the Drake Sports Talk Hour with me and Joel Fry (host of the Drake TV show "Forest Ave. Sportsvine.") and call in (515-271-4704) with your own comments (or if you have AIM, send us an IM there at kdra941)! I'm looking forward to an amazing b-ball season for both men's and women's teams...we'll be there courtside at every home game that school is in session for (ie we wont call the games we're all at home during christmas break for)!

Iowa State University Athletic Director Jamie Pollard became the state sports media darling, but he also represents priorities that irk non-sports fans. In his first year on the job, Pollard hired 47 new people, turning over a third of his entire athletic department, including high profile coaches under long term contract. In approximately the same time period, Drake Athletic Director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb hired two-and-a-half new employees without firing anyone. While ISU is now paying top dollar to rookie coaches and promising expensive upgrades to sports facilities, Clubb states that her mission is to become a model of fiscal responsibility. It’s far too early to grade performances, but Drake teams under Clubb have overachieved dramatically, with the first winning basketball season in decades and a stunningly successful start to the football season. DES MOINES, IOWA – The 52nd-rated Drake men’s tennis team will head to the University of Illinois to tangle with 21st-ranked Michigan (19-6) when opening round action of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships gets underway on May 11.

The Bulldogs (23-2) will carry a 22-match winning streak into their encounter with the Wolverines. Drake meets Michigan for the second time in school history, with the Wolverines winning the previous meeting, 5-1, in 1929.

NCAA crack down on underachieving programs

"The Iowa State men's basketball team was the only Division I program in Iowa to be penalized for academic deficiencies.
The Cyclones lost two scholarships last season.

But NCAA data indicated that two programs at Iowa (men's swimming and women's tennis), two at Northern Iowa (baseball and men's cross country) and one at Drake (men's soccer) could face similar penalties next year.

All other athletic programs at Iowa's Division I schools had APR scores in excess of 925."
