Men's soccer to take on DM Menace May 8

This should be a fun game. I wonder how they'll handle guys from DU who play for the Menace (last year they had Kuhn, Webb, Foster, Edwards, and Kennedy).

As someone who might wind up purchasing Menace season tickets, I'll be rooting for the Dogs in this one.

The U S News & World were recently announced their 2010 College Rankings and again the Drake experience looks like a relative bargain when compared to other universities in their region . Drake's category -Master's University is defined as offering a full range of Undergraduate programs and some Masters Programs but few Doctoral programs This category was split into 4 regions North -South -Mid West and West--Overall Drake tied for third with Xavier but when compared to the 6 highest ranked schools boasted the most selective admissions percentage and the second lowest cost (tuition & fees ) room and board not included KUDOS DRAKE !!

One criteria: student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career...

Impressive accomplishment, congrats to these two and Coach Holmes!

BTW, Indiana hired an alum to be the next head coach... Here's hoping SHC is putting together the right contract to keep Sean at DU.

"The record attendance coupled with the positive feedback that we received for hosting the 2008 NCAA meet contributed to Drake receiving strong consideration to host future meets. Our gratitude goes out to the NCAA selection committee."

Hopefully the ground will be a little drier than than in 2008.

Webb Becomes Second All-America Honoree In Drake Men's Soccer History

"Garrett earning second team All-America honors is well deserved," Drake head coach Sean Holmes commented. "It's representative of what he did this year but also over his four-year career. I think it is both an individual and a collective honor for the team in that we don't win without Garrett and he doesn't win the award without the supporting cast that surrounded him and played collectively so well."

This is a great statement from Coach Holmes, he's such a talented coach who speaks very thoughtfully about his players.

Rick Wanamaker and Kevin Little come to mind but that was many moons ago.

Drake will start at home on Thursday against 8-9-2 Western Illinois. The winner will then take on the overall #4 12-4-4 Ohio State in Columbus on Sunday. The first round draw is pretty favorable because we've already beaten WIU this year but the potential second round matchup is a very difficult one. Will be interesting to see how the boys acquit themselves to a difficult matchup should they get there.

Drake And Creighton Wage Classic 3-3 Double-Overtime Soccer Match , Saturday night

The two sides registered 22 shots apiece in a contest that will serve as a prelude to a rematch between the Bulldogs and Bluejays on Friday (Nov. 13) in the semifinals of the State Farm MVC Championship at the Cownie Soccer Complex starting at approximately 6:00 p.m.

The tie secured the number two seed in the event for Drake and raised its mark to 11-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in league play, while Creighton saw its record move to 7-3-5 on the year, including 4-2-4 in the MVC.

This concept is extremely common in the Ivy League and I read recently that Vanderbilt has had an endowed head football coach chair since 2002.

For any of those who might have the channel and any interest, the Drake vs Evansville game on Friday, October 23rd will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel. I don't remember the channel in Des Moines but it is either 114 or 212. Consequently, if you are in Milwaukee, it's either 114 or 212, whichever it isn't in Des Moines haha.

Today's article in the New York Times "Marist ,Provided With National Stage,Gets The Travel To Go With It " discusses Marist's entry into the Pioneer Football League.Although Drake plays Marist today the only mention of Drake in the article is "their [Marist ] game against Drake is not only the home opener but also a graduation of sorts " The lack of emphasis on Drake as an opponent in the article may be understandable except for this quote " The league's roster includes institutions more often associated with basketball:Butler,Dayton,Valparaiso and Davidson " What can we infer from Drake's omission ? Drake is more associated with Football ? Track and Field ? Soccer ? Academics ? None of these ?

Arnold registered a game-high seven saves en route to posting her first career shutout, against No. 20 DePaul. The shutout was the first for Drake since a 3-0 victory over Indiana State on Oct. 26, 2008 and the initial home blanking of an opponent since a 9-0 triumph vs. North Dakota on Oct. 19, 2008. On the season she has pulled in 29 saves.

Senior Elizabeth Woerle has been named MVC Offensive Player of the Week.

Offense -- Elizabeth Woerle, Drake
Sr., MF, Coon Rapids, Minn.
Woerle registered a goal and an assist in helping Drake to a 1-1 mark. In the Bulldogs' season opener at North Dakota State, she sparked Drake to its first victory in a season lid-lifter since 2003 as she netted the golden goal in overtime in a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph. Earlier in the contest, she assisted Laura Moklestad on her first career goal.

Regents Want to Eliminate Funding for Athletics

The Iowa Board of Regents wants to cut all funding for athletics at the state schools. Iowa cut their general funding a couple of years ago. ISU gets about $3M of their $43.3M athletic budget this year from the general fund, so they could probably survive the cut without too much pain. UNI gets $4.6M of their $11.5M athletic budget from the general fund, so they'd probably face major changes without taxpayer money.

This sounds like a good idea to me. I can't believe my tax money has been supporting ISU and UNI athletics (and Iowa until recently).

I was wondering if all the positive national publicity during the Cinderella Men's Basketball Season 2007-2008 had any lasting impact upon admissions at Drake.
It would be interesting to compare categories such as number of applicants -average ACT/SAT scores-admission yield (the percentage of applicants who apply that actually attend ) and the geographic distribution of the applications.
The admission statistics from say 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 would make an interesting comparison.
