Other than some idiot under the category - Notable Alumni - posting "Jason Sigal -Greatest Drake Student EVER Aug ,2010" there seems to be no additions/corrections since around 2006 .Does anyone employed by Drake ever check out Drake University on Wikipedia ? If not -it may be a good idea to do so on occasion

The Iowa Basketball Exposure League has an unique opportunity for those living in the Greater Des Moines Metro. This is a concept borrowed from independent league baseball.

The IBEL is searching for host families for our professional basketball players for June 11 to June 20 in the Greater DSM area. This will include athletes coming back from Europe and soon to be graduates. Last November Greg Dilligard was selected from Illinois State and Charles Simpson who has played ProA France ball.

IBEL Host families score free season tickets! Come meet ISU and other athletes at our tryout when you sign up to host. The goal for IBEL players is to sign overseas for 2010-11.

A new professional basketball league called the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) sent out a press release on Sunday saying that it intends to start its inaugural season in June, with teams in 12 U.S. cities. However, the AABA is different from other sports leagues because only players who are "natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league."

Pacific Creates New Division of External Relations

Administrative Reorganization Will Allow Focus on Community

October 7, 2009 -- Pamela A. Eibeck, President of University of the Pacific, announced today a reorganization that allows the university to enhance its commitment to the community and to athletics. Dr. Ted Leland, formerly Vice President for University Advancement, becomes Vice President for External Relations effective today. Leland will oversee intercollegiate athletics in addition to continuing oversight of Pacific's alumni, community relations, government relations, and university events offices.

"This change allows Pacific to take advantage of Ted's unique skills as a highly respected leader in college sports," said Eibeck. "It also allows Ted to focus on expanding Pacific's strategic partnerships with the Stockton community. Pacific has much to offer in helping to enhance the quality of life in our region and Ted's role will be essential to focusing our efforts where they can be most beneficial."

A new position, Vice President for Development, is being created to expand the University's fundraising capabilities. The new Division of Development will be responsible for coordinating University-wide fundraising and preparing for the next capital campaign. Pacific concluded the most successful comprehensive campaign in its history, "Investing in Excellence," in 2007. The campaign raised $330 million for scholarships, endowment and facilities. A new campaign is anticipated but was put on hold due to the onset of the national recession and retirement of former President Donald V. DeRosa. With President Eibeck on board, planning will begin for a new campaign.

A nationwide search will begin this fall for the Vice President for Development. Leland will continue to supervise the Advancement offices until the hiring of a new Vice President.

"Pacific's Intercollegiate Athletics program," said Eibeck, "has a great history and promising future. The partnership of our well-respected Athletics Director Lynn King with Ted Leland will result in exciting opportunities for our student-athletes. Together, Ted and Lynn will build renewed interest and Tiger spirit in our students and our community.

"I look forward to working with Ted Leland," said King. "His experiences and expertise in intercollegiate athletics will have great value for our department. Adding his voice both within the University and outside the University will strengthen our initiatives."

"I'm excited about my new role," said Leland. "Pacific is committed to serving its community and I look forward to strengthening these relationships."

Leland, a 1970 and 1972 graduate of Pacific, is a nationally known leader in college athletics. Before coming to Pacific in 2006, he was Director of Athletics at Stanford University for 14 years. Leland played football at Pacific as a student and coached football at Pacific, Stanford and East Tennessee State. He was Director of Athletics at Pacific from 1989 to 1991 and at Dartmouth College from 1983 to 1989. Leland earned a doctorate in 1982 from Stanford University.

Pacific Athletics Director Lynn King reports directly to Leland effective immediately, but will continue to work with the President on major athletic policy issues and other matters.

I have listened to this wise man on Fox for some time. This is not new news about which he writes; BUT I had no idea that he was paralyzed from the neck down..or that he was an MD and a lawyer. Amazing !

Dr. Charles Krauthammer

Dr. Krauthammer is on Fox News . He is an M..D. and a lawyer and is paralyzed from the neck down. A friend went to hear Charles Krauthammer. He listened with 25 others in a closed room. What he says here, is NOT 2nd-hand but 1st. The ramifications are staggering for us, our children and their children.

Last Monday was a profound evening, Dr. Charles Krauthammer spoke to the Center for the American Experiment. He is a brilliant intellectual, seasoned & articulate. He is forthright and careful in his analysis, and never resorts to emotions or personal insults. He is NOT a fear monger nor an extremist in his comments and views . He is a fiscal conservative, and has received a Pulitzer Prize for writing. He is a frequent contributor to Fox News and writes weekly for the Washington Post.

The entire room was held spellbound during his talk. I have summarized his comments, as we are living in uncharted waters economically and internationally. Even 2 Dems at my table agreed with everything he said! If you feel like forwarding this to those who are open minded and have not drunk the Kool-Aid, feel free.

Summary of his comments:

1. Mr. Obama is a very intellectual, charming individual. He is not to be underestimated. He is a cool customer who doesn't show his emotions. It's very hard to know what's behind the mask.The taking down of the Clinton dynasty was an amazing accomplishment. The Clintons still do not understand what hit them. Obama was in the perfect place at the perfect time.

2. Obama has political skills comparable to Reagan and Clinton . He has a way of making you think he's on your side, agreeing with your position, while doing the opposite. Pay no attention to what he SAYS; rather, watch what he DOES!

3. Obama has a ruthless quest for power. He did not come to Washington to make something out of himself, but rather to change everything, including dismantling capitalism. He can't be straightforward on his ambitions, as the public would not go along.

He has a heavy hand, and wants to level the playing field with income redistribution and punishment to the achievers of society. He would like to model the USA to Great Britain or Canada .

4. His three main goals are to control ENERGY, PUBLIC EDUCATION, and NATIONAL HEALTHCARE by the Federal government. He doesn't care about the auto or financial services industries, but got them as an early bonus. The cap and trade will add costs to everything and stifle growth. Paying for FREE college education is his goal. Most scary is his healthcare program, because if you make it FREE and add 46,000,000 people to a Medicare-type single-payer system, the costs will go through the roof. The only way to control costs is with massive RATIONING of services, like in Canada . God forbid!

5. He has surrounded himself with mostly far-left academic types. No one around him has ever even run a candy store. But they are going to try and run the auto, financial, banking and other industries. This obviously can't work in the long run. Obama is not a socialist; rather he's a far-left secular progressive bent on nothing short of revolution. He ran as a moderate, but will govern from the hard left. Again, watch what he does, not what he says.

6. Obama doesn't really see himself as President of the United States , but more as a ruler over the world. He sees himself above it all, trying to orchestrate & coordinate various countries and their agendas. He sees moral equivalency in all cultures. His apology tour in Germany and England was a prime example of how he sees America , as an imperialist nation that has been arrogant, rather than a great noble nation that has at times made errors. This is the first President ever who has chastised our allies and appeased our enemies!

7. He is now handing out goodies. He hopes that the bill (and pain) will not come due until after he is reelected in 2012. He would like to blame all problems on Bush from the past, and hopefully his successor in the future. He has a huge ego, and Dr. Krauthammer believes he is a narcissist.

8. Republicans are in the wilderness for a while, but will emerge strong. Republicans are pining for another Reagan, but there will never be another like him. Krauthammer believes Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty & Bobby Jindahl (except for his terrible speech in February) are the future of the party. Newt Gingrich is brilliant, but has baggage. Sarah Palin is sincere and intelligent, but needs to really be seriously boning up on facts and info if she is to be a serious candidate in the future. We need to return to the party of lower taxes, smaller government, personal responsibility, strong national defense, and state's rights.

9. The current level of spending is irresponsible and outrageous. We are spending trillions that we don't have. This could lead to hyperinflation, depression or worse. No country has ever spent themselves into prosperity. The media is giving Obama, Reid and Pelosi a pass because they love their agenda. But eventually the bill will come due and people will realize the huge bailouts didn't work, nor will the stimulus package.These were trillion-dollar payoffs to Obama's allies, unions and the Congress to placate the left, so he can get support for #4 above.

10. The election was over in mid-September when Lehman brothers failed, fear and panic swept in, we had an unpopular President, and the war was grinding on indefinitely without a clear outcome. The people are in pain, and the mantra of change caused people to act emotionally. Any Dem would have won this election; it was surprising it was as close as it was.

11. In 2012, if the unemployment rate is over 10%, Republicans will be swept back into power. If it's under 8%, the Dems continue to roll. If it's between 8-10%, it will be a dogfight. It will all be about the economy. I hope this gets you really thinking about what's
happening in Washington and Congress. There is a left-wing revolution going on, according to Krauthammer, and he encourages us to keep the faith and join the loyal resistance. The work will be hard, but we're right on most issues and can reclaim our country, before it's far too late.

Do yourself a long term favor, send this to all who will listen to an intelligent assessment of the big picture. All our futures and children's futures depend on our good understanding of what is really going on in DC, and our action pursuant to that understanding!! It really IS up to each of us to take individual action!! Start with educating your friends and neighbors!!!

If you haven't heard, Speaker Pelosi will try to ram through the House a $1.3 trillion, 1990-page government-run health care bill this week.

With our very freedom at stake, I have an important request to make of you:

Come to Washington, DC this Thursday, November 5, at Noon for a nationwide "House Call" to protest this government takeover of our health care system.

OR:

If you can't make the trip to DC, join the protest by calling your Member of Congress' office on Thursday at Noon.

I know coming to Washington, DC is a lot to ask, and I wouldn't be asking if I did not think it was critical. But this could be our only chance to stop the government from taking our freedom by taking over our health care.

If you can make it to Washington, DC, Members of Congress will be holding a rally at noon on the East steps of the U.S. Capitol, followed by walking the halls of Congress and the Capitol office buildings to share your concerns directly with your representative and his or her staff. We're hoping as many people as possible responds to the "House Call" to demonstrate our strong opposition to Pelosi's plan for government-run health care.

The overwhelming outcry at the August town halls was a clear sign that the American people reject a government takeover of health care. But now it's as if Speaker Pelosi is pretending those town halls never happened. They are more determined than ever to ram through this legislation without listening to the wishes of the American people.

Before the House votes later this week on spending $1.3 trillion to create a government-run healthcare system, we have another chance to make our voices heard.

"The Proposal"
When a company falls on difficult times, one of the things that seems to happen is they reduce their staff and workers. The remaining workers must find ways to continue to do a good job or risk that their job would be eliminated as well.
Wall street, and the media normally congratulate the CEO for making this type of "tough decision", and his board of directors gives him a big bonus.
Our government should not be immune from similar risks.

Therefore:

Reduce the House of Representatives from the current 435 members to 218 members.
Reduce Senate members from 100 to 50 (one per State). Then, reduce their staff by 25%.
Accomplish this over the next 8 years (two steps/two elections) and of course this would require some redistricting.

Some Yearly Monetary Gains Include:

$44,108,400 for elimination of base pay for congress. (267 members X $165,200 pay/member/ yr.)
$97,175,000 for elimination of their staff. (estimate $1.3 Million in staff per each member of the House, and $3 Million in staff per each member of the Senate every year)
$240,294 for the reduction in remaining staff by 25%.
$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork barrel ear-marks each year. (those members whose jobs are gone. Current estimates for total government pork earmarks are at $15 Billion/yr).
The remaining representatives would need to work smarter and improve efficiencies. It might even be in their best interests to work together for the good of our country!

We may also expect that smaller committees might lead to a more efficient resolution of issues as well. It might even be easier to keep track of what your representative is doing.

Congress has more tools available to do their jobs than it had back in 1911 when the current number of representatives was established. (telephone, computers, cell phones to name a few)

Note:
Congress did not hesitate to head home when it was a holiday, when the nation needed a real fix to the economic problems. Also, we had 3 senators that were not doing their jobs for the 18+ months (on the campaign trail) and still they all have accepted full pay. These facts alone support a reduction in senators & congress.

Summary of opportunity:
$ 44,108,400 reduction of congress members.

$282,100,000 for elimination of the reduced house member staff.

$150,000,000 for elimination of reduced senate member staff.
$59,675,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining house members.

$37,500,000 for 25% reduction of staff for remaining senate members.

$7,500,000,000 reduction in pork added to bills by the reduction of congress members.
$8,073,383,400 per year, estimated total savings. (that's 8-BILLION just to start!)

Big business does these types of cuts all the time.

If Congresspersons were required to serve 20, 25 or 30 years (like everyone else) in order to collect retirement benefits, tax payers could save a bundle.
Now they get full retirement after serving only ONE term.

Old Butch ...

Old Butch

John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, Old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but one morning he noticed Old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover. To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully next year, the bells are not always audible.

"(Victorya) Van-Pelt died of acute upper respiratory distress, Drake President David Maxwell said in an e-mail to students and faculty members Monday afternoon.

“Although the precise cause of her condition has not yet been determined, Victorya’s family was told that it was not viral (including H1N1) in origin,” Maxwell wrote.

Ugh. Iowa celebrating like they won the Big 10. They should be embarrassed. That kicker just did not get enough height on his attempts and that's what did them in. As a Badgers/Drake fan I would have loved to see Iowa lose but I guess it was not meant to be.

A movie named "The Experiment" will be filmed near Drake. I have no idea if it's a major film, but it stars Adrien Brody. They'll shoot some stuff in Mars Cafe tomorrow morning (Wed, 7/14), and Mars Cafe says shots of Dog Town will be all over the film.
