OK, usually, my paddling season starts a little sooner in the year. The Bulldogs run combined with nasty weather has caused a big delay. I had already run 73 miles by this time last year. So now, it's catch-up time.

I'm shooting for 1000 miles paddled this season. I'd love to meet some Nation folks and do a trip or two. Actually, you can join me on any of my trips unless it's too cold, like this Wednesday, and you don't have the right cold water gear.

If you feel like it, post any experience or desires you have. Canoe, kayak? Do you run whitewater or just a relaxing stream? I love wildlife filled streams with sections of class II waves for playing....and eden type spots for sandbar camping. Don't think there is any whitewater in Iowa? Think again. We can go right down to Walnut Woods off 63rd and play all day on class I and II waves, at the right water level. Lizard Creek, North River(Winterset area and under covered bridges) and the Yellow River are experienced paddlers only need apply.

So far I have 2 members of the forum that will be going out with me within the next month or so and a Bulldog player who I will name later after it's confirmed....would also like to go when he returns to Des Moines. Hope it works out....he told me to call him on a certian date so.......

New Drake Area Restaurant

A Register bloggger says Jethro’s BBQ is under development at 3110 Forest Ave in the old Pizza Hut and DM Police Traffic building. It's being developed and co-owned by Bruce Gerleman, who's a co-owner of Splash and has done some historic renovations in Des Moines. The restaurant should be open in time for Relays. It's great to see a new restaurant in that building, especially when it's run by someone with strong Des Moines ties.

You can make your own player, train him up, manage a team and play in games.

They also have live action instant replays, and an active forum, brand new game.

Make anything from an OT to a WR to a Kicker or a Linebacker.

Just a little advice, but dont sign to a computer team without looking them over first, you may end up getting screwed and be buried behind the depth chart.

Drake braces for unprecedented flood of freshmen...BY LYNDA EDWARDS....Drake University is prepping for an expected influx of 961 freshmen this fall, which is believed to be its biggest class ever. The estimate represents a big jump from the 780 to 810 freshmen of recent years. In response, the school has added five new faculty members, two counselors and two new student advisors. To house the newbies, Drake bumped up plans to renovate the lower floor of Morehouse Hall from 2010 to this summer. The area had been occupied by Drake's International Center.

This week it's Drake grad school alum Brian Wansink, the self-proclaimed "diet guru," whom the government has put in charge of revising the food pyramid. I trust that grain products (e.g. Lunar Ale) will still be at the bottom of the pyramid.

After serving as chapter adviser to Drake's leading fraternity, Wansink became a college professor. He never misses a chance to pitch his book, which will be mentioned in the Drake alumni newsletter a few hundred more times.

I'll have to cut this message short, because I'm headed to Gates for a Beef and a Half. It's really not much when you serve it on a big plate.

I've been a Cub fan for all of my 27 years. When I hit about high school, I started following the team only causually. Since the 2003 playoffs, I've been following the Cubs on a daily basis. My question for you long-time Cub fans is: How the hell do you people do this? This season is brutal. This has to be the hardest season I can remember. There have been worse teams, but at least those teams were supposed to be bad. This team has talent, but through injury and apathy and maybe a little ignorance, they're just awful.

The Iowa Energy season has started. They're doing well, winning their first three games before dropping their last one. They have players of local interest, specifically former Hawk standout Jeff Horner. Their home opener drew 8842 on Monday, a D-League record for home openers by a couple thousand. Last night was their second home game; it drew 2803.

Larry Whiteside, a Drake graduate who became one of America's premier baseball reporters, died last week at age 69.

The Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America approved his nomination for the J.G. Taylor Spink Award (Baseball Hall of Fame) this year. His name will be offered to the national committee, who will choose three finalists for the award at the All-Star game.

Whiteside covered Major League Baseball for more than 30 years, beginning at the Kansas City Kansan in 1959. At the Milwaukee Journal from 1963-1973, he covered the Milwaukee Braves careers of Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Felipe Alou, Joe Torre and Warren Spahn before their departure to Atlanta. After the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee in 1970, Whiteside covered the first four seasons of the new Milwaukee Brewers franchise.

When he was hired by the Boston Globe in 1973, Whiteside was the only black reporter in America covering MLB on a daily basis for a major newspaper. At the Globe, he covered the 1975 and '86 World Series.

Whiteside, a native of Chicago, was considered an expert on Negro League baseball and among the first group of baseball writers to provide extensive coverage of the sport in Japan and Australia.
