Substitutions and game start times?

Seems like the Women's team has very few followers here so I thought I would see if I could stir something up.

1. Why have a game at 5:00 PM on a week night?
It didn't make much sense to me when it was part of the double-header and no sense at all for a single game.
With attendance falling off, making it more difficult for people to get there after work sure isn't helping.
Maybe there is a reason that I'm just not seeing. If so, please share it.

2. My pet peeve with the coach is the constant substitution that seems to disrupt the continuity and the flow of the game.
If a group is good enough to start, they should be good enough to play more than 2 to 3 minutes at a stretch.
Then if a substitution is made, it seems like the player entering the game deserves more than 2 to 3 minutes to adapt to the game and contribute.
Repeat: Maybe there is a reason that I'm just not seeing. If so, please share it.

I have some sad news

Unfortunately I have to give up broadcasting Drake football and women's basketball games. I recently took a new job and the freedom to do these games is not there anymore for me. This new job will allow me to better support my son and allow me to move on with some difficult things life has thrown at me.

I have enjoyed my time with Drake. You have some class people coaching your teams in Chris Creighton and Amy Stephens. I not only respect them as coaches, but more than that, they are great people. They're the kind of people you would want your kids to play for. And the players they recruited are top notch young men and women. They are the kind of people you want to spend time with. I've always said the job was not about winning and losing to me, but about watching these young men and women do their thing.

A couple of things I will always remember is Amy making my then 8-year old boy so comfortable during his first road trip with dad. She let him sit on the bench, help with towels and water for the players, and just feel like he had something to do with the game......After the Dayton loss last year, I told Chris about coming home to a new empty house that weekend. That night he e-mailed me a prayer and told me to call his cell phone if ever I needed anything. This just hours after Steve Valentino broke his heart with a last second touchdown pass.

Thanks to you people, the fans, as well. I heard your encouragement, your love of the programs, and I hope our paths will continue to cross. Your thank yous meant more than you could ever imagine.

Drake Recruit Is MVP at Missouri All-Star Tournament

Kyndal Clark, who will play at Drake next season, was named the Most Valuable Player in the Missouri Challenge All-Star Tournament in Springfield over the weekend.

But Clark said the highlight of the weekend was being able to present a check for $2,500 to the principal and athletic director of Joplin High School. Clark lives in Webb City just a couple of miles from where the tornado hit in Joplin.

The Missouri Challenge Tournament involves all-star teams from various sections of the state. Clark played for the Southwest team. It scored victories over South Central, 92-39; over Central, 102-68, and won the championship by beating Kansas City, 98-71.

The women had their public scrimmage tonight, beating their men's practice squad 23-15 in a 12-minute, continuous-clock scrimmage. (Why are they scrimmaging men for this? Wouldn't it make more sense for the women to scrimmage each other and let more players get into the game?). The starters were Hackbarth, Reid, Person, Turk, and Wollschlager. The next three in were Grenfell (at point), Christianson, and Running. Montgomery also played a little at the end. McSparron was in uniform but didn't play, and Schechinger was on the bench in street clothes.

It was hard to tell much in such a short scrimmage. Christianson looked good hitting a 3, and I thought she played the best of the freshmen in this short game. Turk played full energy as always, and I think she hung around after the scrimmage to thank every fan personally for coming out. Person looked a lot stronger than I remember her being last year.

The women pretty much dominated the men in the special games. Turk beat Wedel in the 3-point contest, and Grenfell beat Hawley in their semi-final match-up.

Thanks to all the players for signing autographs before the scrimmage. I saw a lot of kids getting posters and shirts signed.

Drake was without freshman guard Angela Christianson for Thursday's game against Evansville after she got hit by a car while crossing 27th Street after practice on Monday. ... No bones were broken, but she suffered a concussion and whiplash after being lifted into the air and landing on her back.

Wow. Good to hear it wasn't worse. She's out for at least 2 weeks.

I am totally impressed by the skills, concentration, BB knowledge & enthusiasm of our gals. Last night Amy subbed in 3 gals at one time -- all freshmen! And they came to play!

Kyndal Clark of Webb City, Mo., hit 11 three-point shots and scored 37 points to lead Webb City to an 83-33 victory over Joplin in a game Tuesday night.

Dilonna Johnson of Whitefish Bay, Wis., scored 21 points -- including three three-point baskets -- to lead Whitefish Bay Dominican to a 72-42 victory over Racine Catholic Central.

This says Dilonna Johnson has committed to Drake. She's a 5-8 junior point guard from Whitefish Bay (Wis.) Dominican High School outside of Milwaukee. She averaged 15.4 points per game last year.
