As we are starting the conference season now is a good time to take a look at this freshmen class.

Kayla Pearson is the only guard in the class. She started the season trying to do things that used to work in high school and discovering that they don't work at this level. She has progressed a long way from there. Defenses can still get her to pick up her dribble in the wrong spots and she still tries some passes that have zero change of reaching their target, but she's doing much better on the whole. If she keeps progressing at this pace she'll be in good shape come tournament time.

Steph Running is currently getting the most playing time. I'm most impressed by her footwork. Most post players didn't need good footwork to get by in high school and it takes a while to learn this instead of reaching and fouling. She also runs the court very well. Seems to have picked up the offensive and defensive schemes very well and knows where she is supposed to be in most cases. She gives us quality minutes as she continues to learn.

Katie S (too lazy to look up the spelling). She has a great shot and a really quick release. She has great potential, but needs to learn to be more agressive in grabbing her space on the floor. She gets pushed around on defense and still needs to work on her footwork. Runs the floor like a stereotypical post, too upright. First off season conditioning / strength work should solve that.

Liz Nauman. I haven't seen enough to give a fair evaluation yet. Odd minutes here and there just aren't enough.

Taken on the whole this is an impressive class at this stage of their development. If they continue developing as they have, they'll be an important part of this program going forward.

BU beats DU

Braves Beat Drake On Last-Second Shot

Tough 2 home games for the Dogs.

vs. UNI

"The Drake Athletic Department is reminding all women's basketball fans that Friday's Drake vs. UNI women's basketball game, which appears on schedules, posters and tickets as scheduled for a 7:35 tipoff, has been moved up to 7:07 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Midwest with Dan McLaughlin and former Bulldog Laura Leonard on the call. SIU does a thing every year where they give out tons of tickets to local elementary schools and have an afternoon game for the event, that may be the reason. Don't know if the other game was moved so all teams get the same amount of rest or just a coincidence.

In any event, the Bulldogs ought to be able to take care of business today. SIU had a complete meltdown over 2 years as former coach Eikenberg was on her way out the door. Many defections, bad blood, filling the ranks w/ transfers.... Misty Tiber is in her first year and seems to have a more positive vibe going, but they are shorthanded. Managed to beat Evansville at home, but that accounts for half of their wins. Played a weak non-conference schedule and only picked up 1 win.

Tiber brought Stephanie Neptue with her from her prior team (DII) and she seems to be making an impression. Only 4 players from last years squad remain and they averaged 57 of 200 minutes available in each game last year.

They are coming off their first conference win and any team that hasn't given up can be trouble, but this one should be one the Bulldogs can dominate beginning to end. I'd like to see some of the young players get some experience minutes today.

MVC team RPI's

RPI Team W/L Strength of Schedule

54 Creighton 5-3 52
74 Drake 5-2 175
85 Indiana State 7-1 227
117 Northern Iowa 3-5 40
127 Missouri State 5-3 176
145 Illinois State 3-3 108
180 Wichita State 4-2 261
220 Bradley 2-5 138
250 Evansville 2-7 162
320 Southern Illinois 0-7 204

Note that our strength of schedule falls in the bottom half of the Valley. McClatchey has been slowly going broke, and as it has, it has let go the writers who specialized in women's sports. But it appears that McClatchey no longer has anyone whose primary beat is women's sports in the Wichita (or Kansas City) area, let alone a writer who covers mainly college women's hoops during the season. They had no preview of the Creighton/WSU game that was played earlier this week in Omaha, and their short article summarizing the game was written by "Eagle Staff" -- which means they had no one from their paper at the game.

Newspapers are dying, and a lot of the good coverage of women's sports has disappeared from them. Geezers like me are distressed about this, but it is a fact of life. What is taking their place? SOCIAL MEDIA. Espn.com at the national level. Blogs at a national, regional and local level. Twitter -- great for very timely information "bites" (but not for posting "old news" like a victory that happened 2 days ago). Facebook -- more local though you can find teams from all over the country with pages on their now. And yes, Discussions Boards -- national (e.g. rebkell for women's hoops), regional (e.g. hoopscoop for the Big 12), and local, like this one. A short anecdote about how twitter and discussion boards can be used to promote women's hoops: A friend of mine who is a very good sportswriter by profession has a blog, and when she updates the blog, she puts out a tweet with the url and a short note about the topic. She does not post on discussion boards, but she knows that between her tweets and the people who just "check-in" on her blog periodically, someone is likely to post it on some discussion board somewhere. And they typically do, which then drives more readers to her blog. And this is how she gets her blog stories about women athletes heard. These are stories that probably would not be told were it not for her efforts, and often include features about women athletes, some of whom are famous and others that are not, that would not otherwise get told. But in the end, they all help support the idea that women can achieve great things through sports.

It's cold out, but the sidewalks around Knapp appear to be in decent shape. We need to win this game, and while we come into it with a better conference record, RPI and strength of schedule, Wichita State has some reasons to get fired up for a win, including the fact that they got thumped by Creighton on Thursday. Let's go Drake!

versus Missouri State Lady Bears

Drake hasn't cancelled tonight's game (so far). Sounds like the bigger problem in town won't be the snow but the cold. So bundle up if you feel like it is safe to travel to the game!

Missouri State played both of its first two conference games at home and won both, beating Bradley 72-67, and UNI 90-80 (in what must have been a defensively challenged game :-)). They have two pretty strong offensive threats in Casey Garrison and Christiana Shorter, but are thin at the point guard position. We are their first MVC road game. Playing on the road is always hard, but I imagine the poor weather conditions will not work in their favor.

Here's today's coverage of the game from the Springfield News-Ledger: <a href="http://www.news-leader.com/article/20100107/SPORTS040101/1070378/Lady-Bears-hit-Valley-road" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.news-leader.com/article/20100107/SPORTS040101/1070378/Lady-Bears-hit-Valley-road. Worth mentioning is that he transitioned from being a highly effective coach of the 6 player game to a great coach of the 5 player game while at Maynard West Central.

While at Maynard, Klinge coached standouts:

* Mary Parsons (graduated in 1966), one of the All-American Redheads: <a href="http://www.allamericanredheads.com/id4.html" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.allamericanredheads.com/id4.html;

*Deb Kaune (1972), who was the leadering scorer at the IGHSAU State Tournament in 1972, racking up 189 points in 4 games. Poock scored 92 points in a game versus Postville High in 1975, making 43 of 59 field goal attempts and 6 of 6 free throw attempts. Poock's 92 points places her 12th on the all-time scoring list for a single game in IGHSAU history.

In 2003, he moved to Waukon and has been coaching there since. Under his coaching, Waukon has been a State Tournament Qualifier in 2004, 2005 and 2009. (Before his arrival, the last and only time a Waukon team qualified for the state tournament was in 1979 when prep standout Jody Runge was playing.) Klinge's Waukon team won the 3A championship in 2004.

At Waukon, he has coached prep standout Samantha Reiser, who scored 71 points in 3 games at the IGHSAU State Tournament in 2004.

His current team is ranked second in the state: <a href="http://www.allamakee.k12.ia.us/activities0809/girls%20basketball/new_page_1.htm" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.allamakee.k12.ia.us/activities0809/girls%20basketball/new_page_1.htm

Hats off to you, coach! The Redbirds knocked off UCLA in the Iowa tournament and their most recent outing was a 2-point OT loss to DePaul. Cirone is gone, but they still have a talented team and a strong corp of coaches.

Indiana state is a rather gaudy 9-2, however, it has been an exceedingly soft schedule so they really have not yet been tested. Weide's teams always play tough aggressive D and push the ball on offense. We will find out rather quickly how they do against better competition.

vs. New Orleans

Happy Holidays from Drake Women's Basketball

Drake plays New Orleans at 5:30 tonight.
