so here goes- its fun to hear about all the recuits and many sound really good- and i am sure they are better than whats has been going on in the past BUT i have to say this: i see they are also looking at or commited to NIU, lehigh, yale. UW wilwaukee, SDSU, Wofford etc (you get my drift) i was hoping we were actually aiming higher because of last year because we are ine the MVC because we play better competiton and have more exposure- it just seems we ought to also be in the running for kids looking at the big 10 or simlar once in a while anyway. dont get me wrong i am also excited about the upcoming year but just wanted to say whats on my mind.

Of the 3 commits so far for next season, Drake beat out other MVC teams for both Unhlenhopp and Van Deest. Ryan Wedel, who transfered to Drake this summer was being recruited by many MVC teams while in high school. Frank Wiseler, the kid from Luxembourg, was considered a pretty good catch, although I don't know what other American schools he was looking at.

I understand what you're saying, but Drake is beating out better schools for recruits than the ones you mentioned. Some of the kids mentioned on this board who ended up going to lower level D-1 schools were never actually offered scholarships by Drake, so I don't think you can say we're losing recruits to those schools.

Yeah, it's frustrating to lose a kid like Nixon to a school like NIU....but, it sounded like in the end he just wanted to be close to home. Also, it's possible with the commitment of Hawley, that Drake was no longer interested in the young man. We don't know all the details. And, as an FYI, NIU's coach, Ricardo Patton, is considered one helluva recruiter.....he brought some pretty good talent to Colorado, just couldn't seem to do anything with it.

From everything I've heard (and I don't have any inside information), Drake's staff is working extremely hard on finding a couple of "difference makers" for the last two scholarships. Right now, I have faith that they'll get it done.

dont mean to sound negative but i have to put in my 2 cents worth. now i dont live in des moines and i dont know the details like many of you- but there isnt a bigger drake fan than me. i have been following them for over 30 years and still to this day see at least 3-4 games a year- and i am in chicago area.

Interchangable with Western Illinois. Watch Northern Illinois turn the corner over the next couple years. Ya never know.

None of us know the real story with any of the recruits. Maybe he really picked NIU over all the other schools. Maybe all the other schools, including Drake, back off on Nixon. Doesn't matter now and I'm sure he is a good kid with a bright future. .... and feed him beans. Good luck Mr Nixon .. unless you play anyone form the Valley.

Not necessarily.....

The former ended up winning out, and when other in-state universities filled their available scholarships in the class of 2009 with commitments from other recruits

It could be that he had offers from several of the other schools....offers that were withdrawn when they no longer had any scholarships available.

This all sounds pretty suspicious to me. I can't think of any reason somebody who was offered by Illinois and 20 other schools would choose NIU.

Over the course of the past month, we have consistently said that Northern Illinois University was the school to beat for Tony Nixon. Sure enough, that prediction held true until the end, as the 6'5 guard from Seton Academy in South Holland, IL rendered a verbal commitment to the Huskies today while on his official visit. Nixon chose NIU over scholarship offers from a plethora of other schools, most notably Fresno State, Drake, UTEP and Gonzaga..................As we had indicated previously, Nixon's decision came down primarily to whether he wanted to stay close to home or go somewhere outside the state of Illinois. The former ended up winning out, and when other in-state universities filled their available scholarships in the class of 2009 with commitments from other recruits, Nixon's decision became a relatively simple one.

All I can say is that based on this quote from the article, Drake is definitely the place for this young man. The academics are great, the players are embraced by the entire community and playing time is available next year with J Barenbruch graduating.

Chicagohoops.com has him listed as one of the top shooters in the area....in the linked article, 5 of the 7 top shooters have been mentioned as potential Drake recruits at one time or another.

According to a Rivals Network article that came out yesterday, Nixon seems to have Drake ranked high as he closes in on making his choice.
