Totally agree, but that gives him a year to lift, eat steak, and play against BC and BH. any Juc is going to need a year to assimilate as well. Unless we absolutely steal one who also is able to handle the academics. I would put the resources behind SJ.

This guy would have been a good fit for Bucky's spot in '09-'10. Hopefully, Phelps can replace him with a decent JUCO transfer next year. Either that, or he better get on the horn with his contacts in the Soviet bloc that were used at N.C. State.

Having a year to learn the program better and improve are only positives IMO. He has an oppurtunity to fill a void when Bucky and Brent are gone after next season. I've read pages of threads from the Cyclone board where the opinions seem to point out that if there was one player at ISU that resembled what we admire about Drake's players, it would be Cory. He is a good student and I think he will blend well with Des Moines, the University, and the basketball program.

It's hard to judge much based on summer league games, but I've seen enough of Cory Johnson in those games to know that he has a variety of post moves, can score with either hand around the basket and can hit the 3. I think he could thrive in a wide open system like Drake's.

McDermitt can't even keep his own recruits. He plays a boring style of basketball that will not succeed in the Big 12. His days as a cyclone are numbered...about 700. Obviously Kansas and Texas were tough and better than anybody in the MVC...past that however, I don't think so. I've seen Cory's game. He can play. The problem is MickyD can't coach.

I think Corey Johnson would be a great addition to Drake and it has nothing to do with whether the Big 12 or MVC are on par competitively. It's all about the system and roll to be played by Johnson. At ISU this past year, they had a bunch of finess guys who did not want to play inside and defend down low. McDermott had to use Johnson as his backup 5 because outside of Hubalek there was no one else who could or would do it (Brackens may get there someday, but this year he was soft). Johnson had to play straight-up low post defense against 5s who were 4-5 inches taller than he was. He also received very little help from other defenders. It's easy to say he was undermanned defensively, but IMO it was a team-wide failure and not a discredit to Johnson.

In Drake's system, he would play a very different role. First, even if he manned the 5, he would be in a match-up zone with lots of fronting. Klayton showed everyone this year, that positioning and footwork by an undersized defender can prevent teams from being able to exploit mismatches down low. Corey Johnson is taller than Klayton and very aggressive. He also would be able to use his energy to come out to the corners and take away the 3. I don't see him as a defensive liability at all because DU's defense won't be putting him on an island the way ISU's did this past year.

Offensively, I think you would see a different player as well. He would be able to run the floor and create space for himself against slower bigs. He would be given a chance to be a threat from 3 and be able to post up for inside moves out of certain sets. The question I have here is whether his ballhandling is good enough. To be effective, he would need to be a good passer and I would also like to see him be adept at driving to the hole from the corner.

Overall, because of the differences in the system and role he would play at Drake, if he were to come here, I think that he would have the potential to make ISU fans shake their heads and wonder why in the world McDermott ever let him go.

Yes .. there is a difference in terms of selling your soul in a BCS league. I don't think there is a difference overall in the league's team's ability to play basketball and win.

Mc Bulldog, do you really belive that the MVC is as tough as the Big 12? I know the MVC is a solid conference but it is no where near the Big 12. The MVC got one team in the dance, the Big 12 got 6, that alone should end that debate. Farmerclone was dead on saying Cory wasn't tall enough to guard Big 12 centers and wasn't fast enough to guard the 3 or 4 postion. If Drake is his choice I wish him all the best, there is no doubt he is a hard worker. Yes, I know Drake just killed ISU this year!

No Schollie available this year that we know about. But he would have to sit out for a year, maybe Keno gives him one then and Cory pays his own way this year - depends how badly he wants to play at Drake and if Keno thinks he would be a good fit. We should find out in the next couple weeks as signing period will be open.

Based on reading your response, you seem riled up. I was never riled up. I'm just saying it only takes 5 guys on the court as opposed to football. The BCS mentality is going over like a turd in a punch bowl on this message board. I read over on CycloneReport where either you or someone else refered to Drake and UNI as mid majors. Take that term and blow it out your a$$. I pull for both ISU and UI when they aren't playing Drake or any other MVC school. The problem is that other than Drake and UNI playing UI and ISU .. Big 12 and Big 11 schools are afraid of the Valley. So FarmerClone, I'm not riled up but to come on Drake's board and insinuate that Johnson can't play in the Big 12 and be successful but he can in the Valley, without someone calling you out is a bit like putting lipstick on a pig, right?

Yes it is a talented league and I never said otherwise. What I did say was Cory, at 6'7" is not big enough to guard the 6'10" to 7'0" centers he faced in the Big 12. In the MVC, as solid as it is, he would not face very many centers that tall. That does not mean the players are not talented, just that Cory matches up size wise better.

Sad? Time and time again Cory got abused by bigger, faster players while trying to play defense. Now maybe some of it was the coaches misusing him, but it was fairly easy to see if you watched him play.

Cory is most certainly a talented player, but like most players he is one with limitations. It did not work out at ISU and I wish him the best. I never said anything derogatory towards Drake or the MVC so I am not sure why your defensive instincts kicked in. I wanted him to succeed at ISU more than anyone because I love the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the court, but it became more and more apparent that he could not defend players well in the Big 12 but is his abilities to be creative around the hoop on offense are certainly apparent and he plays hard and smart. He will succeed somewhere.

I'd hope he would want to still play at a high level as opposed to DII and no offense to FarmerClone but the MVC is a very tough, talented, and high fan base as any league in the country. I'm not wanting to debate your opinions of what you deem are Cory's weaknesses due to the level of Big 12 talent but I find that arguement pretty sad. I've seen Johnson play a lot and he is a very gifted young man. Fact is you have a coach who inherited Johnson and it didn't work out. From what I understand, Johnson wanted to leave last year and between McDermott and his asst.s, they talked him in to staying. (I'll leave the rest out as it doesn't matter at this point.) Fact of the matter is Drake has a coach that plays to the player's strengths and focuses in on getting the most out of those areas in order for the team to excel and win. He is a player's coach and between he and his asst.s, they can motivate and teach kids how to play the game. We have posts now that aren't that quick and they shut moficky's down ... baby!

Cory has a great motor and is the type of player that Drake has had great success with. He works hard all the time and is a team player. In the Big 12 though, he was not big enough to play center and not quite fast enough to guard forwards. He has great low post moves and can shoot the three fairly well. He wants to play in an uptempo offense and Drake would be a great fit.

Just as an FYI, the ISU board has people saying he'll be visiting Winona State next weekend. Winona is the best D-2 team in the country over the past 3 years. (3 national championship games in 3 years and 2 championships).

I'm not sure if anyone else can read this article without a subscription but it goes on to say that Cory is hearing from Wisconsin-GB, Evansville, Utah State, and Colorado State. The main feature of the article is that he is visiting Drake ... not just hearing from them.

Like I stated before in a different thread, if Keno wants Mr Johnson and Mr Johnson wants Keno and Drake, I'm all about it.
