FWIW, Vlastuin's long jump distance is a good foot and a half longer than the longest in Iowa at the state meet in any class. Pretty impressive number.

I think I remember reading that the South Dakota schools didn't even offer him in B-Ball. If they did, and he had any interest in playing B-Ball, he would have taken a scholarship at SDSU to play.

Assuming he's gone, I'd be ticked if Vlastuin left Drake for a bigger or similarly-sized basketball program, but he didn't. As far as I'm concerned, he left one sport that he'll be pretty good at to play another sport that he'll be pretty good at. I wish him luck.

FWIW, Vlastuin is still on Drake's official roster for next year. And for anyone who wanted to retire #5, Sean "Alex" Jones has that number on the roster.

In all fairness to Jared .. living in Des Moines, we all know how newspapers can take things out of context.

Who knows exactly what happened, maybe Coach P wasn't as impressed with Jared as Beano was. Maybe Coach P communicated "some things" that made Jared think he wasn't as wanted as before. Maybe Jared just decided he didn't trust or like the new staff .. who gives a honk'n flip. He's not coming to Drake. I gotta admit though .. since he isn't going to be playing basketball in college it makes me wonder .. he might be doing us a big favor if his heart isn't in it 100%.

It's amazing how much can change in 3 weeks....here are some quotes from the Sioux Falls paper...as reported by MechaBulldog on 5/25.

"I was definitely a little nervous about the whole thing," Vlastuin said. "When you commit to a school and then the whole staff leaves, you have to wonder how things are going to work out."............Vlastuin returned to Drake to talk with Phelps, then decided he'd stick by his decision to attend the Missouri Valley Conference school..........."He seemed like a pretty nice guy," Vlastuin said. "So I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully, it will all work out and I'll like it."

Jared chose not to attend Drake before heading down there this summer. From my understanding, the lack of communication between the new coaches/new recruits was very poor, which almost always happens when a new coaching staff comes in.

That's interesting because I have heard just the opposite about the new coaching staff. They have communicated frequently with some recruits that they've yet to even offer and the team members report that Phelps has communicated with them more in the first two months than Beano ever did. It's funny, my kid who's just a student goes to college and registers, goes through orientation, finds his own place to live and gets along just fine. No coaches in contact, no deans, no professors nobody...except an occasional call or visit from yours truly. A basketball recruit feels neglected when a new coach assumes that he's coming, goes about the business of moving, putting a staff together, getting recruiting going etc. Perhaps staying under the watchful eye of mom and dad in South Dakota is best for everyone involved.

Hey SDHOOPS, Milkbone, and any other SD fan. I wish Jared nothing but the best. Making a decsion like this is big for a 17 or 18 year old kid. I assume he and his parents are stand up people and weighed the options and made the right choice for what is best for Jared and his future. I know Jared is a heck of an athlete and was looking forward to him playing for Drake but hey .. shat happens. Good luck Jared! ... maybe we'll see him at the Relays someday.

Not sure what to think about this. I never saw him play, but I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of him. I think the staff could very well end up replacing him this summer with a better prospect.

I have received info from a very reliable source that Vlastuin has asked for, and received, a release from his scholarship at Drake.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader has a short piece on Vlastuin at the state track meet. Most of it is about his reaction to Drake's coaching change:

If MP measures the players with their shoes on I would not be surprised if Bucky grows an inch or two this summer.

Jared won the long jump today with 22' 6". Shorter than he's capable of but good enough. That's two state championships and a third place. That'll work. He had the best jumps of all classes in the high jump and long jump. Really nice finish to his track career.

Jared took 1st place in the high jump at the State A Track Meet yesterday. He jumped 6'8," which I believe was the best in all three classes.

Jared also took 3rd in the Triple jump, although I do not have his mark on that.

He will be competing in the long jump and discus today yet.

Jared's results from the regional track meet last week:
high jump: 6' 7" first place
long jump: 22' 9" first place
triple jump: 41' 2.5" second place
discus: 155' 1" third place
Lennox won the team title

State track is Friday and Saturday, May 23-24.

Jared was able to meet Coach Phelps in Sioux Falls last weekend. It sounds like it went well.

Also, yesterday, Jared broke the All-Time SD Long Jump(All classes) record, jumping 23 feet 8-3/4 inches.

Jared has qualified for the state tournament in the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and discus. This is his first year participating in the discus.

A couple of routine dunks, then he jumps over a guy, and then a between the legs in the air dunk.

Jared was named the SD Coaches Assn. class A player of the year.

A track season update. He's not running this year, but did set the all class state record in the long jump at
23' 8.75" and has a 6'8" high jump, with the goal of clearing 6' 10.5" for the school record. He's throwing the discus this year, which he hasn't done before, and has a state qualifying throw.

Finally, I heard a rumor that Jared happened to meet Coach Phelps in Sioux Falls last weekend. No details to report, it's just what I heard.

Vlastuin is one of 15 semi-finalists for the South Dakota Mr Basketball Award. Drake women's recruit Amber Wollschlager is a semi-finalist for the Ms Basketball Award. The awards will be presented in Sioux Falls on May 4th.

I don't know the rules in South Dakota, but in some states, junior high players are allowed to play high school ball....so, she could have played at one school in grades 7-9 and another in grades 10-12.

That makes sense. South Dakota has a lot of tiny, isolated schools, and they probably need warm bodies to fill out their rosters. That would be impressive for a 7th grader to make an impact against high school competition.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader named Vlastuin one of the state's five top players in boys basketball during the 2007-08 season. I guess you could call that first-team all-state. Said his coach, "He has made big improvements in his game every year. His best years of basketball are still ahead of him. One of the most talented offensive players ever to come out of Lennox."

This sportscast http://www.ksfy.com/home/video/16937586.html?video=pop&t=a has video of a South Dakota class AA vs. class A all-star game from Saturday. Jared and the A squad lost to the AA squad. There's a brief highlight of Jared spinning around Colton Iverson (U of Minnesota recruit) and scoring via a dunk. Jared was the class A mvp with 22 points and 9 rebounds. He also won the slam dunk contest. Hopefully I'll get some video of that at some point.

Prior to the boys game was the girls game, and a brief highlight of Amber Wollschlager (sp?), a Drake recruit.
