With 902 in the freshman class, Drake wants to be more selective.

"Drake University administrators plan on raising the academic standards to get into the university, and they plan to make the application process more selective. Last year was the first year that Drake University required an essay with the application. Next year, the admissions office is aiming for the magic number of 850 admitted students."

Thanks for the update on Drake's new admission criteria . I'm surprised that Drake had gone on for so long without requiring an essay. Even the Common Application (346 member colleges from 45 states and DC) has always required an essay.Hopefully a more selective admission policy will increase the admission yield.No matter-it is certainly a step in the right direction

Back in the day, Drake's music school was a shining star of the University. The marching band was a part of that, also, of course. It was led by Don Marcouiller, considered "the originator of a new concept of precision marching which has served as a model for major bands throughout the country" ( The 1964 Quax). What I am trying to say is, with the drive to raise admission standards, I am sure this would also apply to the music school. I read the story on the Drake web site tonight regarding the jazz band concert. It sounds like a really great show. I wish I was in Des Moines so that I could attend it. Anyway, I every so often read an article in the paper about this or that college band coming to town and giving a concert. This jazz band show sounds like the perfect show to take on the road. What a great recruiting tool, not only for the music school, but for the University, in general. It could show the excellence of one of its programs and promote enthusiasm for the school, as well as enhancing the reputation of the school in communities aroun the country. Why shouldn't other students, besides the jocks, have the opportunity to travel and represent the University? There has to be somebody reading Drake Nation that knows someone to talk to about this. Lets get on it!!!

Roger Williams is the most exciting player in Drake music school history (thanks, Billy Foster).....
