| On the basketball board, threads like this start four days after the end of the last season. Since this is football, I'll start it four days before the upcoming season. I guess I could just wait and see...

| Don't know if he'll be a CB or an LB, but you're forgetting their best tackler, Benny Morrison. If the coach gave him the opportunity, he would probably be their best receiver, also. I'll pass along the story of one of the greatest catches I have ever seen at any level of football at another time.
If the place kicker doesn't work out, watch out for Rasmussen. One of the best high school kickers I have ever seen.

| I haven't forgotten about the PFL's leading tackler from '07, but I haven't heard a thing about him this year. Lots about Cole Douglas, though.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Morrison coming off the bench. |

| According to the game preview on Drake's website, Platek is at H-Back/J-Back.
Richard Neal will probably start at DE. Their description of the rest of the D was clear as mud. |

| LurkingDog (8/26/2008) According to the game preview on Drake's website, Platek is at H-Back/J-Back.
For those of us unfamiliar with the terminology, what exactly is an H-Back/J-Back?

| H-back...made popular by Joseph Gibbs, HOF coach of the Washington Redskins. A smaller TE (= better WR, not as solid on run blocks at point of attack), who could best bigger/slower, run-stuff LB's in pass routes.
Coincidentally this led to the Tampa 2 pass coverage, made famous by the Bucs Super Bowl run (i.e. needed something to take away WR-like TE's running routes down the middle of the field).
Nowadays you have athletic freaks (Shockey, GAtes, etc.) who can do both...one of the reasons TE is so much more of a marquee position in today's spread game.
J-back is a smaller fullback, for the same reasons as above. Better WR, not so better a blocker.
Sorry for pontificating so unabashedly, it's been awhile since football has been the topic of conversation. The best time of the year approaches... |

| I would add that there's not much difference between a J-Back and an H-back. The coaches make the distinction, while the sports information people (obviously) don't.
According to coach Selby's bio, Drake has two tight ends: the traditional "y" and the "j." Neither have to be lined up tight, and I imagine the j-back will seldom be used as a traditional tight end. Basically, the J-back could be anywhere.
If one imagines the offensive backs as dots connected by a line, they would form a J when the j-back is lined up as a slot back. Maybe the inspiration for the name? |

| | The Drake website says Bialas is now a WR. I'd say this is proof of coach C's intention to throw the ball. |

| I was hoping the Register might list the starting line-ups in today's paper, but I didn't see it anywhere.
