| The previous link also seemed to imply that the job of Drake women's soccer coach is open.....sure enough, I check the Drake website, and there is no head coach listed on the page any longer. There was an article a few days ago about the new soccer recruits. The quotes in the article are now all attributed to "the Drake coaching staff" and not to any specific coach.
Interesting. Anybody know what happened to the previous coach?

| Volley Talk?
That post says the salary in the low $40k's is a "killer hurdle" to attract and retain a volleyball coach. Is it really that bad? That's about what I figured Drake paid. That's probably competitive with most lower level D1 volleyball coaching salaries, and more than most elementary and high school phys ed teachers make. It's tough for a small private school to open up and pay more for a coach in a non-revenue sport. Having one assistant and reporting to an associate athletic director I could see as a hurdle.

| Went to the Times-Delphic site and didn't see anything about the women's soccer coach. They also haven't followed up on the volleyball story since it was first reported that the coach was let go. At least no where that I could find. What's up with that?
With regard to the coach's salary, numbers of assistants, etc. A student-athlete will have certain expectations when joining a Division I program. If Drake is unwilling or unable to field a Division I program they should not pretend to. It's a disservice to the student-athletes that they recruit.
Don't want to be a downer after the great men's (& women's for that matter) basketball season, but sucking is not acceptable in any of the programs whether its basketball, volleyball, journalism or biology.

| KOTA-TV from Rapid City, SD, says Drake hired former South Dakota St assistant Phil McDaniel as their new head volleyball coach. Here is his bio from the SDSU athletic site (they've already removed his name from the coaching roster). An SDSU board says he accepted an assistant position at SIU, but backed out to take the Drake job.

| From the SDSU website:
Phil McDaniel begins his third season as assistant volleyball coach at South Dakota State University. He joined the SDSU coaching staff in 2005, after helping guide New Mexico State to consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament.
McDaniel served three seasons as an assistant coach at NMSU, where he helped lead the Aggies to an 86-15 overall record, three straight Sun Belt Conference titles and NCAA appearances in 2003 and 2004. In addition to his duties at New Mexico State, McDaniel was head coach of the Diamondback Volleyball Club in Las Cruces.
Previously, McDaniel compiled a 42-7 record as head coach at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, N.C., and also served as director of coaches for the East Carolina Junior Volleyball Club.
A native of Decatur, Ill., McDaniel earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Culver-Stockton College (Mo.) in 1996. At Culver-Stockton, McDaniel competed on the varsity soccer and tennis squads.
He added a master’s degree in counselor education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1998.
