| From the Des Moines Business Record:
Drake braces for unprecedented flood of freshmen...BY LYNDA EDWARDS....Drake University is prepping for an expected influx of 961 freshmen this fall, which is believed to be its biggest class ever. The estimate represents a big jump from the 780 to 810 freshmen of recent years. In response, the school has added five new faculty members, two counselors and two new student advisors. To house the newbies, Drake bumped up plans to renovate the lower floor of Morehouse Hall from 2010 to this summer. The area had been occupied by Drake's International Center.

| Several things come to mind from that article. There is also a write up about the increase in today's Register.
1- No mention that athletics and the exposure has helped Drake's stock.
2- Sounds like Maxwell would like to increase the graduate programs enrollment.
3- I was always under the impression that Drake had approx. 3,600 full time under grads.
4- I suppose with the new housing being built on the west side of the campus, Drake ability to house an increase of this size should be more than adequate.

| Good points, McBull.....I had also wondered if it was just a coincidence that a winning season in basketball was followed by an increase in enrollment.
Getting your school's name out there makes a huge difference. Rightly or wrongly, athletics is the easiest wasy to get your school's name known. Would any of us have heard of Seton Hall or Gonzaga or George Mason if it wasn't for athletics?

| | Its wonderful that Drake's freshman enrollment is up. We are going to make a college choice very soon now as my son Jeff is a high school junior. We have had contact with Iowa State and were very impressed. Since our visit Iowa State has stayed in regular touch with Jeff via multiple post cards and emails. About a year ago I contacted Drake and gave them Jeff's information as a prospect. The person responsible emailed me back but has never contacted either Jeff or I again. Jeff has not gotten a post card or an email. It certainly does not appear to me that Drake has increased freshman enrollment by proactively recruiting potential students. Drake's higher profile over the last year due to basketball success and the huge moment with Zach Johnson surely is responsible for the enrollment increase. |

| my HS senior son is getting too much stuff from drake; one or two mailers every week, multiple emails, occasional phone call about events. I'm impressed with the marketing, just wish they'd mail less & offer more schollies
Good luck Keno! Thanks for a GREAT year!

| | That is good to hear getreal. Maybe they only market to prospective students during senior year. Jeff is getting mail from other schools now regularly though. Schools that have not been "tipped off". |

| Hopefully Drake's Cinderella year in men's basketball will be a boon for admissions in future years. I find it hard to believe that with Drake's academic reputation that (according to Business Week ) the 2007 undergraduate profile shows an overly generous selectivity standard of 80 % admitted with a yield (those admitted who are enrolled ) of 21 %.
GO BULLDOGS !! |
