This often discussed subject surfaced again on MVCFans after a flurry of articles and sourcing this weekend. It seems to be becoming more and more real. Wondering what you guys think and what options you guys like. A lot of the MVC Fans folk seem to like the idea of going to 12 and adding the some of the Dakota schools. I don't remember how fast these things can happen but that wouldn't bode well for the Drake coaching search, you'd think; if the rumors are true.

Drake needs to know what its next conference is right now, because it ain't gonna be the MVC in 5 or so years.

...and not at all sure these schools would want a smaller share of an already shrinking revenue pie. That's what they'd get by expanding to 12. Some of the football fans may want to open the doors to outsiders from the MVFC (esp. Dakoka schools). But why would the private school bloc allow it?

Official finalists not chosen to replace Creighton: Valparaiso, UMKC, and Illinois-Chicago. Don't think much has changed on this. Dakota schools won't have the votes for entry

I'd love to have South Dakota St in the conference, they're going places.

With North Dakota's nickname issue resolved, they are joining the other three Dakota schools in the Summit League (as of 7-1-18). I believe the Dakota schools would like to stick together and maintain their century old rivalries. WSU out...followed by the addition of the four Dakota schools would equal 13 Valley members. Suboptimal number.

It's really not a rumor, it's close to a done deal with AAC. The WSU president has been on a 2 fold mission 1) bring back football about 50 m. price tag to upgrade facilities and a very healthy multimillion dollar subsidy yearly to support the program since they will never be able to support with attendance money and the TV money won't start flowing until after their program is well established enough to compete in the new conference (will take several years for that). 2) move to a different conference. They blame all their ills on the MVC. If the the AAC can't make expansion work this year they will leave the year after.
As DUB has commented several times the MVC administration screwed up big time a few years ago when the turned down Butler and the possibility of another pretty good school. Of course this was about the time of the start of expansion craze among the BCS and other schools. Extremely poor judgement, sitting on their hands.
I say we will ultimately have to find another conference unless (and it's a big if) the MVC gets their act together and expands. However, I'm not certain there are enough good sports schools still out there to make a difference. But first we have get our men's program out of the cellar or we mirght end up playing William Penn. I do have a certain amount of faith that we'll do it right this time but it's a long road back.

Anyone know what it takes to add a member to the conference? Simple majority vote? 2/3?

Right. The Big 12, for example, requires 75 percent. Kinda doubt the public schools in the Valley could pull a power play.

Dakota's have solid fan bases and might be some of the biggest crowds for ball games as these schools are the only shows in town. We won't need to continue to play the conference tournament at St Louis, that arena will feel extremely empty!! NCAA also is all about WSU leaving for a bigger conference, no mistake why they were a 10 seed and Ill St. was not included in the big dance! Re-alignment has taken away many multiple league bids. The schools who use to create the multiple bid leagues are now in bigger conferences ala Creighton, Butler, VCU, Davidson moved leagues.
I would guess MVC would try to get Valpo in the conference. Works geographically and they have had a strong tradition.

So...how is Drake going to pick its next conference? That's absurd talk. Unless we have a winning program and a better arena, we're stuck in the MVC as long as the MVC remains a conference. It might become like the MVC is in WBB - near the bottom. But the idea that Drake 1. is going to move (not Drake's style) and 2. could move given our history of "winning" is farcical. The best bet is to allow up and coming schools into the MVC to shore up its brand name as a top mid-major conference.
On another note - can you imagine the MVC with Butler, WSU, and Creighton? Too bad, the MVC leadership squandered that one. I don't blame WSU one bit. The MVC schools for whatever reason could not maintain the level of competitiveness they had through, what, 1996-2006? Since then, there have been a handful of decent teams and then some absolutely dreadful teams nearing the bottom of the RPI. Yes, Drake can take some blame for that, but its hard to tell a program like WSU to stay in a conference where other schools have allowed their programs to devolve into the bottom wasteland of the RPI. Every game they played against Bradley and Drake this year hurt them - win or lose. So, the MVC leadership takes some blame, but its also on the administration of schools like Drake that have made horrible decisions leading to a bottom of the conference that is also at the bottom of NCAA D-1.

Chronic NCAA underseeding for WSU may generate momentum for them moving to a higher-profile conference.

If what I'm reading today is correct, WSU will still be in the MVC next season. If they go to AAC, will be starting in the 2018-19 season.
